But the A's scored four runs at the expense of Rangers pitcher Mar- tin Perez in the opening frame, which was more than enough support for an outstanding perfor- mance from starter Jesse Hahn. The first-inning binge began with two outs and a runner on third. Looking to avoid the powerful bat of Khris Davis, the Rang- ers walked him intention- ally, bringing Ryon Healy to the plate. Healy, who had pinch hits the last two nights af- ter being benched because of a slow start to the sea- son, started at third base and smacked a hard single up the middle to drive in Rajai Davis for the first run. A two-run double from Josh Phegley and Alonso's RBI double down the right- field line gave Hahn an early 4-0 cushion. "That was huge. It really lets the starting pitcher go out there at a time when sometimes it's tough to get into a rhythm and not have the pressure to do it," manager Bob Melvin said. "When you have a four-run lead as a pitcher you can go out there and know you can throw the ball over the plate and make them hit it." Hahn could not have started the game any bet- ter. The right-hander re- tired the first six Rangers on only 17 pitches. Aside from Joey Gallo's home run to lead off the fifth, Hahn was dominant over six innings as he al- lowed two hits and struck out four. The only trou- ble he really encountered came in the fourth when he got out of a two-on, one- out situation by striking out Rougned Odor and El- vis Andrus. "He's keeping the ball down a little bit more. Early in the game he was a little up in the zone but he had a much better mix of pitches today," Melvin said. "His changeup has been a big pitch for him the last cou- ple of games and keeps ev- erybody off his sinker. His breaking stuff made his day today." Hahn said he threw his changeup more frequently than he normally does, which led to keeping hitters off balance. After beginning the season pitching out of the bullpen, Hahn followed up a solid start in a loss at Kansas City with his best outing of the year. "Everything feels great and I'm coming in with a good mindset every start," Hahn said. "The early lead allowed me to go out and at- tack hitters in order to try to get quick innings."
