JULIEZEEB—DAILYNEWS The Red Bluff Sunrise Rotary Roving Jail, which raises funds for groups such as the California Highway Patrol Explorers, Corning Chamber of Commerce and the Tehama County Library during the 11Days of Round- Up, stopped in Tuesday to see the Tehama County Board of Supervisors. Pictured are Supervisors Dennis Garton, Bob Williams and Burt Bundy staying out of jail with get out of jail free cards, while Supervisor Steve Chamblin is arrested. SUNRISEROTARY Supervisors visited by Roving Jail Themostimportant thing you can do to make your personal economy strong is have an um- brella, an emergency fund with at least enough money to pay all of your bills for three to six months. You can't even imagine being able to save that much? No worries. Start small. Let's say $1,000. Try to save 10 percent of each paycheck — your net income. Too much? OK, start with 5 percent, or even 1 percent, and build up from there. FIRST THING. This is going to be hard, but I know you can do it: Make this savings amount the very first bill you pay. Go to your bank or credit union and set up an automatic deposit authorization for your emergency savings ac- count. You won't miss what you don't see go into your bank account. OK, you'll miss it for the first few months. But soon you re- ally won't miss it. GET RID OF NONES- SENTIALS. Give up the lit- tle things, such as cable TV, eating out, a gym member- ship and a landline. That's a start. You'll know instinc- tively how to add to this list. CUT VARIABLE EX- PENSES. You can't cut off your utilities, stop eat- ing or give up driving. But you can reduce the cost of the food, energy and fuel you buy. Opt for the cheapest supermarket and gas station. Turn out the lights. Run only full dish- washer loads. Every little bit counts! QUIT SMOKING. This suggestion requires no ex- planation, although it does beg the question: Who can even afford to smoke these days? A pack of smokes costs about $6.36 (U.S. av- erage). A pack a day makes smoking a $2,321-a-year habit. And in New York City, it's double. Yeah — $14.50 a pack. STOP PAYING BANK FEES. If you're paying a $7.95 (or higher) monthly fee for the privilege of maintaining an account, stop! Open an account with an online bank (they have better interest rates any- way) like Ally Bank, that doesn't charge a monthly maintenance fee for check- ing or savings accounts. Or check with a local credit union for information on free personal checking ac- counts. Some banks, like U.S. Bank, even offer free business accounts. PULL BACK. Stop send- ing more money than re- quired each month to your credit card companies, mortgage lender or any other creditor. It's admirable that you're being diligent in repaying the debts, but if you con- tinue to do this while liv- ing without money in the bank, you'll be setting yourself up to fall even deeper in debt. CLEAN OUT. Take a look through your cup- boards and closets. Iden- tify everything you haven't used in the past six months. Turn what you don't need into cash by selling them on a website like eBay or Craigslist, or holding a yard sale. ADJUST WITHHOLD- INGS. Use the 2017 Federal Withholding Tax Calcula- tor to make sure you aren't having too much or too lit- tle income tax withheld from your pay. INCREASE YOUR IN- COME. Get a second job. Or a third. Work more hours at your current one. Get creative by making money doing things you al- ready love to do, like walk- ing dogs or selling hand- made items. TAKE LUNCH TO WORK. Have you figured out what you're spending per year on eating out for lunch? At $10 a day, you're spending $2,500 after-tax dollars on lunch. Just think of all the dinner leftovers you throw out that could easily be tomorrow's lunch. STOP AT THE MATCH. If you are contributing to a retirement account like a 401(k) or 403(b), don't stop now but limit your contri- bution to the amount your employer matches. Put these money-saving tactics into play and you'll be able to save $1,000 in record time. But don't stop there. Keep going one pay- check at a time. Soon, you'll reach $5,000, and then $10,000, and then you'll be right on to reaching the big goal. Would you like to send a tip to Mary?
