Yet, only 25% of older adults are eating a well-balanced diet. There are many factors that can affect how we eat. For example, your sense of taste and smell may change as you age, making food less appetizing. Poor nutrition can increase your risk of getting infections and can increase your blood pressure and cholesterol. People who are malnourished make more visits to doctors, hospitals, and emergency rooms, and they stay in the hospital twice as long as well-nour- ished people. Sometimes symptoms of poor nutri- tion, such as confusion and disorientation, can be mis- taken for signs of dementia. Would you like to improve the choices of the foods you eat? The Cooperative Extension Service is sponsoring an 8-week workshop entitled "Steps to Health - Better Choices". This series is designed to instruct indi- viduals on how to improve their health through making better food choices. Session 1 will begin Wednesday, April 12 and the sessions will meet April 19, 26, May 3, 10, 17, 24, & 31, 2017 at the Neal Senior Center. Each class will last one hour, from 10AM-11AM. The enrollment/registra- tion for this series will be Wednesday, March 29, from 10AM-11AM. So that an advance count of the number enrolling can be made, please call the Neal Senior Center at 704/482- 3488 and pre-register. For more information about Better Choices, con- tact Nancy Abasiekong, Extension Agent, Family & Consumer Sciences at the NC Cooperative Extension Cleveland County Center at 704-482-4365. Contact Daniel Dedmon, Program Director at the Neal Senior Center, 704-482- 3488, to register for the workshop. Steps to Healthy and Better Choices Parkinson's Disease is a condition that the public is hearing more about all the time, but many don't under- stand exactly what it is and how it is treated. The seminar will be held at the Neal Senior Center and begins at 3PM. To register for this seminar, please call 704/482-3488.
