ByAnthonySlater BayAreaNewsGroup PHILADELPHIA Steph Curry's two first quarter airballs served as an omen for the brutal shoot- ing night ahead for both Curry and the Warriors. Curry took 11 3s and made zero. The team took 29 3s and only made six. But even in an NBA world gone 3-crazy — a renaissance led partly by Golden State — you can still win in other ways. The Warriors did on Monday night in Philadelphia: 119-108, grunt- ing their way to an NBA-best 50th win of the season. Draymond Green, the low- est percentage 3-point shooter of the Warriors' four All-Stars, was the catalyst in this grind- out game, shaking off a rough week for his best performance in the past half-month. After a sluggish Saturday night against the Nets, Green re- turned with his usual energy in Philadelphia, sparked, in part, by some trash-talking from Six- ers youngster Richaun Holmes, never a good idea if you want Green to remain in a slumber. Green, like Curry, also air- balled a first quarter 3. But soon after, he squirted free on one of those lethal pick-and-rolls with Curry, catching and thundering in a dunk. Minutes later, he beat the Sixers down the court for a breakaway dunk after a defen- sive stop. Holmes, who played well all night, threw down a nasty one-hand alley-oop in the sec- ond quarter and then blocked a Draymond Green shot soon af- ter, letting Green know about it as the ball sailed out of bounds. Green bounced back to return the trash-talk and, from there, was the game's most impactful player, getting in passing lanes, setting up dunks and even hit- ting a shot. SOCCER Cardsshutoutinchampionship Orland beats Corning boys 3-0 in Division 2 title game By Chip Thompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter CORNING In a game that was never close, the Corning Cardi- nals continued their flawless sea- son Friday night, opening the playoffs with a quarterfinal win over the Sutter Huskies 64-50. Austin Mishoe got the scoring started for the Cardinals with a three-pointer; it would be his first of 3 in the first half and 4 on the night. Corey Busta scored 3 times in the opening period and the Cards defense was stiff, giving them an 11-3 lead after the first. The Huskies struggled to get anything to drop in the first but started hitting some shots in the second. The Cards didn't let up, though. Mishoe came up big with a pair of threes and 8 points total, and Brendan Hoag and Marco Tapia pitched in to put the Cardinals ahead 25-12 at the half. The Cardinals defense weak- ened in the third and the Hus- kies put up 19. Matt Joyce homered in his second consecu- tive start and Ryon Healy added a two-run double as the A's top- pled the Giants, 5-4. Down 4-0 after two innings, the Giants tied the game in the seventh before Simon Castro came out of the Oakland bullpen to quiet things down. He went on to get the win when Adam Rosales put the A's ahead with a bases-loaded walk in the eighth. Oakland, the last-place team in the American League West the last two seasons, has now won 18 of its last 24 games against the Giants, including eight in a row in Arizona, during which they are 5-0 in Scottsdale Stadium. Kendall Graveman and Sean Manaea, who figure to be No. 2 and No. 3 in the A's rotation come April both pitched scoreless ball. Graveman threw one inning and Manaea two. Zach Neal, hoping to make the rotation as the fifth starter, gave up a solo homer to Brandon Belt for the Giants' run. Joyce, who had also homered in Mesa against the Cubs on Sat- urday, teed off in the first inning against Giants' starter Jeff Sa- mardzija, driving a one-out drive over the right field wall. "I wish this was the regular season," Joyce said. "It's one of those things. Both times it was a 1-2 count and both pitchers were heaters in. I'm really trying to shorten things up with two strikes." Later in the inning, Stephen Vogt added an RBI single. In the second, Healy followed a wild pitch with a double off Kraig Sitton, doubling the A's lead to 4-0. "It was definitely nice to get back on the field, get some adren- aline and all those feelings back," Healy said after his first start of the spring. He'd been held back for a couple of days with a mild quad problem. Healy was at first base Mon- day after having been the A's third baseman the second half of last year, his rookie season. The A's have brought Trevor Plouffe in to play third, so Healy will bounce between backup duty at first and third base and time spent as the DH. Healy, 25 is young for DH duty, but he seems OK with it.
