nals struggled in the sec- ond and third periods Tues- day night against the Grid- ley Bulldogs, coming away with a 63-41 road loss. Mariah Castle had a big night for the Cardinals, putting up 16 points, in- cluding a pair of 3-point- ers, and hauling in eight rebounds; Kara Beck- with and Nancy Salas each had six points and two and three rebounds, respectively, and fresh- man Jackie Caputo had five points and eight re- bounds. The Cardinals (13-10 overall, 5-2 league) are scheduled to take on the Las Plumas Thunderbirds (11-10 overall, 5-2 league) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Oro- ville. Burney74, Lady Warriors 39 BURNEY The Burney Raiders jumped out to a big lead in the first period Tuesday night against the Mercy Lady Warriors and never looked back. The Warriors played even with the Raiders through the second period but couldn't chip away at the deficit and went into the half down 43-22. It was more of the same in the second half. As of 4 p.m. Wednesday no stats had been posted for the Warriors. The Warriors (2-18 over- all, 0-5 league) are sched- uled to face the Chester Volcanoes (12-9 overall, 2-2 league) at 6 p.m. Friday in Chester. Girls FROM PAGE 1 through the opening pe- riod, when Gridley put up another basket to go up 3-0. The Cardinals would get their first score with a Marco Tapia field goal with 3:29 left in the first. Noah Zoppi would hit a free throw and Tapia and Daniel Vazquez would each hit shots to put the Cards on the short side of a 10-7 first-period score. The Bulldogs scored to open the second before the Cards went on a seven- point run to take a 14-12 lead with 5:24 left in the half. The lead went back and forth, with Cardinals taking it back on a Zoppi 3-pointer and building as much as a five-point mar- gin before finishing the half up 21-19. Defensive pressure marked the third period, with the Cards putting up seven points and the Bull- dogs just four. The Bulldogs opened the final period with a pair of missed free throws and Co- rey Busta scored to put the Cardinals up 30-23. That's when Gridley woke up and put together a six-point run to pull within one at 30-29. Brendan Hoag and Zoppi answered with field goals, the Cards started pulling down rebounds, Zoppi hit a 3 and Busta drained a pair of free throws and just like that the Cards were up by 10 at 39-29. The Bulldogs got within six as time ticked away, but inside of the fi- nal minute Austin Mishoe powered into the lane, knocking down Bulldogs, to put the Cards up 41-33 and there was nothing left to do but take fouls and make shots from the free-throw line — the fi- nal score masking what a close game it was. Zoppi led the Cardinals with 14 points followed by Busta with 10, Tapia with nine, Mishoe with eight and Hoag, Tyler Gline and Vasquez with two each. The Cardinals (23-0 overall, 7-0 league) will host the Las Plumas Thun- derbirds (15-6 overall, 5-2 league) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Corning FROM PAGE 1 CHIPTHOMPSON—DAILYNEWS Corning's Corey Busta goes to the rim Tuesday night against Gridley. Volcanoes erupted with 19 points in the third while holding Los Molinos to just four and held on for the win. Freshman Ty Isaksen led the Bulldogs with 17 points followed by fresh- man Devin Henderson with 15, including a trio of 3-pointers. Alex Russell and Aaron Hardy each put up eight points and Kyle Wood had two. The Bulldogs (16-5 over- all, 4-2 league) are sched- uled for a rematch with the Volcanoes (13-7 overall, 5-1 league) at 7:30 p.m. Thurs- day in Chester. Burney 62, Warriors 38 BURNEY The Mercy War- riors lost on the road Tues- day night to the Burney Raiders, 62-38. Marcus Kuechle scored 25 points for the Warriors with 16 rebounds, three steals and three blocks; Dartagnan Kingwell had seven points, seven re- bounds and two steals; Alavaro Delafuente had four points, five rebounds and three assists and T.J. Frase had two points and two steals. The Warriors (1-20 overall, 0-7 league) will visit Chester to take on the Volcanoes (13-7 over- all, 5-1 league) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Boys FROM PAGE 1 toughest course when the wind is up and the rain is sideways, though the Shore Course is now in the terri- tory because of the stretch of holes that run along the Pacific coastline. Spyglass is no picnic because it plays the longest when condi- tions are soft. Spieth has started the year solidly, though with- out a realistic chance of winning. He was third at the two Hawaii events, though a combined 14 shots behind Justin Thomas, who won them both. Spieth tied for ninth in Phoenix. And already he has dropped one spot in the ranking to No. 6. That's an example of how crowded it's getting at the top of golf. Johnson has a mathematical chance of going to No. 1 if he were to win Pebble Beach for a third time, and if Day were to finish at the bottom of the pack. "There's a lot of young, incredible talent that's on the top of their game, go- ing back to the end of last year and to throughout this year," Spieth said. "It's kind of up for grabs right now, is what it feels like. The Mas- ters is going to be a really exciting one this year, as it kind of always is, but it's going to take some really strong golf, there's going to be a lot of strong golf played I imagine leading up to it and going into it." Sunshine is in the fore- cast for the weekend, if that can be trusted, so get- ting to Saturday will be the challenge. Jim Furyk, a month af- ter being selected U.S. Ry- der Cup captain, is mak- ing his 2017 debut. He has seen just about everything since first playing Pebble in 1994 (six months after Spi- eth was born), which in- cluded a washout in 1996 and a seven-month delay between the second and third rounds in 1998. He waited until Tuesday to leave Florida. "One of the reasons I stayed home yesterday was at home it was 77 degrees," Furyk said.
