TheAssociatedPress WASHINGTON Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee has said he found the president's attacks on the judiciary "dishearten- ing" and "demoralizing," according to a Democratic senator. Sen. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut disclosed the comments from Judge Neil Gorsuch after meeting with the nominee Wednesday, as the candidate for the high court vacancy paid a series ofcourtesyvisitstosenators. In a tweet this past week- end, Trump lashed out at Judge James Robart after he issued a stay on the pres- ident's refugee and immi- gration ban. "The opinion of this so- called judge, which essen- tially takes law-enforcement away from our country, is ri- diculous and will be over- turned!" Trump tweeted. That comment drew re- bukes from Republicans and Democrats. Blumenthal said that in his meeting with Gorsuch, the federal judge said the criticism was "demoralizing and disheartening." Gorsuch's confirmation team confirmed the judge's comments. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals is weigh- ing the appeal of Trump's executive order on immi- gration, which temporar- ily suspends the country's refugee program and bans travel for citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries. In a hearing Tuesday, judges on the appeals court chal- lenged the administration's claim that the ban was mo- tivated by terrorism fears, but also questioned an at- torney's argument that it unconstitutionally targeted Muslims. Trump kept up his criti- cism of members of the judi- ciary Wednesday, slamming the court that is deliberat- ing his executive order and describingmotivationsas"so political." He made the com- ments while speaking to a group of police chiefs and sheriffs. Gorsuch is making the rounds in the Senate, draw- ing praise from Republicans but skepticism from many Democrats, including Blu- menthal. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D- N.D.,saidaftermeetingwith Gorsuch that they had "a thoroughconversationabout the importance of the rule of law and of a judiciary that is independent of the execu- tive and legislative branches of government." By Maria Danilova The Associated Press WASHINGTON On her first day on the job, Educa- tion Secretary Betsy DeVos plunged into her initial as- signment: mending fences with her opponents follow- ing a bruising confirma- tion battle. Parents across the country looked for clues as to whether she will ful- fill their hopes or reinforce their fears. Addressing several hun- dred Education Depart- ment staff members, De- Vos, a wealthy Republican donor and school choice champion, vowed to work with everyone, including her critics, in ensuring the best education in the na- tion's schools. "I am committed to working with everyone and anyone — from ev- ery corner of the country, from every walk of life, from every background and with those who sup- ported my nomination and those who did not — to protect, strengthen and create new world-class ed- ucation opportunities for America's students," De- Vos said. DeVos secured confirma- tion in the Senate on Tues- day by the slimmest possi- ble margin. Vice President Mike Pence had to cast a historic tie-breaking vote.
