The Hornets turned it around in the third to go up 41-40 and stretched the lead to nine by the final buzzer. Kylee Kitchell led the Spartans with 19 points and 13 rebounds, Jesse Miller had 11 points and three rebounds, Lexi Pritchard had eight points, Carissa Twitchell had six points, 10 rebounds and five assists, Allyson Drury had sux points and Maggie Winning had five points. The Bulldogs didn't make it easy on Corning, leading the entire first period and much of the second. The Cardinals took the lead late in the second and went into the half with a slim 21-19 margin in a defensive battle. "Obviously it's a different game than Friday when it was a lot of offense," said coach Kurt Wilkins. "Tonight we had to get back to our roots and play good de- fense and they came at us with everything they had." The Cardinals stretched the lead to five by the end of the third, 28-23, and then turned it on in the fourth to pull away for the win. "I think what you saw in the second half showed just how battle-tested and ex- perienced these kids are," Wilkins said. "They just know how to win ballgames. (In the fourth) we loosened up and we moved the ball. It's amazing how ball movement affects our shooting." The Bulldogs got on the board first, making one of two free throws, but that would be all the scoring until halfway BASKETBALL CARDINALS AT 23-0, SET SCHOOL MARK Corning makes history with victory over Gridley, which led entire 1st period, much of 2nd before Cardinals' rally Corning's Brendan Hoag passes inside Tuesday night against Gridley. THESCORE By Doug Ferguson The Associated Press PEBBLE BEACH Jordan Spieth, still only 23, was amazed that this is the fifth time he has played the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. He's been watching it even lon- ger. Spieth said Wednesday that Pebble Beach was one of the golf tournaments he watched as a kid. He was intrigued, and at times amused, to see PGA Tour players alongside celebrities, entertainers and corporate titans. "These guys who are just so good at what they do, whatever it is, but they for whatever reason can't figure out how to golf," Spi- eth said with a laugh. "And then they come out here and they're hitting shots in front of you, and you see how nervous they are." And he recalled the weather — usually the nasty stuff. "Bad days isn't the way to say it, but just these crazy weather days that just make the Monterey Pen- insula kind of meaner on this golf course," Spieth said. Buckle up. He might get to ex- perience it himself. Pebble has been blessed with mostly glorious weather in the five years that Spieth has been playing, except for cold, windy conditions in 2014 and the occa- sional day of light drizzle, fog or an overcast sky. The three courses on the Mon- terey Peninsula — Pebble, Spy- glass Hill and the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club — have been soaked by re- cent rain, and more was expected for the opening round on Thurs- day and lingering into Friday. Tee times were moved up an hour for the first round to avoid most of the nasty stuff. For the strong field that has assembled at Pebble Beach, they have come to expect it and are pleased when the crazy weather stays away. But it figures to be sloppy. Webb Simpson, coming off a playoff loss in Phoenix last week, hit his tee shot on the first hole Wednesday morning and the ball was half-submerged in the soggy turf. Other players were scooting the golf ball around in the fairway as they tried to find a dry spot from which to play. "I've seen it before," defending champion Vaughn Taylor said of rain and wind. "It's not that en- joyable, but when you get around Pebble and you still look around ... I think someone said last night even when it's at its gloomiest, it's still beautiful. That's what you've got to focus on when you're out there. If it's nasty weather, just take a look out at the ocean. If you can see it. Because it's still an amazing place regardless of the weather." The field features Jason Day, two-time Pebble winner Dustin Johnson, Spieth and Patrick Reed from the top 10 in the world, along with Phil Mickelson, the runner- up to Taylor last year in his quest for a fifth title at Pebble. The Spartans went up 8-7 af- ter the first quarter and held onto that margin to go into the half on top 19-18. But they struggled to score in the second half and the Hornets pulled away for the win. Eric Spencer and Tye Clement led the Spartans with six points each, Brayden Hutchins had five, Jarron Barrow had four and Derek Gordon and Evan Tanner each had three. The Spartans (8-13 overall, 1-6 league) are scheduled to host the Foothill Cougars (15-8 overall, 4-3 league) at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Chester 65, Bulldogs 50 LOS MOLINOS The Los Molinos Bulldogs turned around a first- period deficit Tuesday night, but couldn't overcome a quiet third period, taking a 65-50 loss at home to the Chester Volcanoes.
