JANUARY 4-10, 2017 UCW 11 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM On Jan. 12, the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra presents the concert "A Little Night Music" at the St. John Episcopal Church. This will be the first chamber concert held at the church. "Chamber music is a term that describes music written for a small ensemble of musicians - usually for 15 or less, versus the typical 60+ you see in a full orchestra," explained Julia Atkins the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra director of artistic operations and marketing. Much of this season has featured guest conductors, but this concert is unique. There will be no conductor, as is traditional for chamber music. Instead, the musicians will lead themselves. This chamber orchestra will be composed of five musicians who all regularly perform with the orchestra. "This concert will feature just our principal string musicians performing in a string quintet — a small chamber ensemble that consists of five musicians — opposed to the full orchestra, which consists of strings, woodwinds, brass and percussion with over 60 musicians on a stage," Atkins said. "The concert will also be held in the historic St. John's Episcopal Church in Downtown Fayetteville to make the setting more intimate and unique. Most of our other concerts are held in a concert hall at either Methodist University or Fayetteville State University. Chamber music itself is rather different from orchestral music — you'll receive the same energy and passion, but the sound quality will be a little bit more intimate and personal because it uses fewer musicians. It makes it rather unique, and gives a warm feeling as you listen and watch, which is why it's perfect for a cold month like January!" This concert is a great way to introduce beginners to the wonders of live classical music. "This is family-friendly, especially if you want to expose children or friends to classical music. The main piece, 'Eine Kleines Nachtmusik' is very well-known even if you aren't familiar with its title so it will be very familiar to most people who attend," Atkins says. In fact, many may find the song familiar as the NOKIA ringtone that helped to usher in the age of cellphones. Much of this season has been looking to the future, especially with the search for a new conductor. This concert is no different. "We're really hoping to expand this chamber series for future seasons! These concerts tend to be well-attended and well-received and we hope we can continue to do more of them," Atkins says. This concert is very different from the normal performances presented by the Fayetteville symphony Orchestra. It highlights the versatility of these incredible musicians. Atkins said, "With these, we can play a different kind of music and perform pieces that haven't been performed in a very long time — but are still pieces that we know! After the Jan. 12 concert, there will be another concert the night of Jan. 26 featuring George Frederick Handel's 'Water Music,' which is also extremely well-known even if you aren't familiar with the title."
