Hosted by the Eastover Civic Club, its own World War II Monument, created from the same granite as the World War II Monu- ment in Washington, DC, was unveiled and dedicated at the Eastover Community Center with local veterans, family and friends in at- tendance. With a day as beau ful as the sen ment be- hind the monument, the ceremony took place on Na onal Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day as dignitaries, government officials and resi- dents gathered to pay their respects. Several veterans provided moving accounts of their experience on the warfront and residents of Eastover expressed their gra tude to have a permanent place to reflect and honor these extraordinary veterans. "Eastover is the first community in Cumber- land County to honor the US World War II Veterans through this symbolic gesture," says John Meroski, Faye eville Area Conven on & Visitors Bureau President and CEO. "We hope they will pass the baton on to our other municipali es and throughout the US to help us forward now more than ever the values these brave men and woman ins lled in the American fabric." At the annual Eastover Heritage & Heroes Day on October 29th, a memorial tree provided community members an opportunity to pur- chase a memorial ribbon to hang on the tree in honor of a hero. The proceeds from this tree helped finance the memorial, in addi on to other generous dona ons from local busi- nesses and community members. The tree re- mains next to the monument as a reminder of how the community rallied behind these men and women and their families. Eastover hopes that the installment of their World War II monument will inspire other communi es to honor their local veterans as well by crea ng monuments of their own.
