DECEMBER 28 - JANUARY 3, 2016 UCW 19 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Incarnate (91 minutes) sucked. I tried to think of a more clever way of putting it, but some truths scream out to be told in a simple, straightforward way. From the first few scenes I could tell this had been filmed a few years ago and shelved — leads David Mazouz and Carice van Houten have appeared in Gotham and Game of Thrones as much older-looking people since this was made. Maybe the producers were hoping if they waited to release it Incarnate would seem less like a rip-off of every other possession story, but time has not been kind. For one, the Robert Kirkman comic- based Showtime series Outcast parallels Incarnate to a considerable degree. To sum up, Outcast is the story of a man whose past is haunted by demons who possess those closest to him, committing acts of violence against him and his loved ones. He has a special ability to perceive these demons. He can expel these creatures by punching them repeatedly, and when they are expelled they look like black gunk. Incarnate, on the other hand, is the story of a man whose past is haunted by a demon who committed acts of violence against him and his loved ones. He has a special ability to communicate with demons. His presence enables the possessed person to cast out the demon, and when the demons are expelled, they look like black gunk. Instead of beating demons out of people, he gets them to jump out windows to symbolize their rejection of evil, or something, because like Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight, people cannot be possessed by demons without some sort of consent. If you read that and thought, "how stupid" imagine how it felt to sit through it and try to remember enough of it to write a review. The film opens with Mama Melisandre (van Houten) and her son Cameron Bruce Wayne (Mazouz). Cameron has a Bad Dad, and now Cameron is about to get possessed. That happens, and then the story switches to the real hero, Dr. Seth Ember (Aaron Eckhart). Seth is wandering through the fantasy life of someone with a horribly limited imagination. See, there is this lawyer and the lawyer is possessed. Never mind how Seth found this guy, that part is not important. Come to think of it, neither is the rest of what occurs in the movie. Bottom line; Seth explains to this guy, who is very happily enjoying the attentions of a young, attractive blonde woman in an exclusive club, that none of what he is experiencing is real. After some back and forth about how this guy has no life and no friends, Seth tells him he has to jump out a window to symbolize his rejection of the demon's control, or something. Let me tell you something, Seth: if you want me to reject demonic possession you really need to paint me a picture of a life worth living. Think about it: the real life of the possessed lawyer is sad and empty; a demon comes along and suddenly he's living his dreams. Why would he choose to end the fantasy? Well, clearly this guy has more moral fiber than me. He jumps, and back in the real world Seth and his helpers record the expulsion of the demon. Before I forget to mention it, Seth's helpers are atrociously bad actors. I would like to think whoever actually got hired to play these characters decided not to show up for work and were replaced by two people picked off the street at random. After some character-establishing dialogue and glimpse at Seth's sad, sad, backstory, some chick named Camilla (Catalina Sandino Moreno) recruits Seth to expel the demon from Cameron. Surprise, surprise — Cameron is possessed by the very demon that Seth has been looking for! Neither the story nor the acting gets any better. The third act limps to a close that promises a sequel to the film, not that anyone would pay to watch one. Now showing at Patriot 14 + IMAX.
