2 theLambda Letter welcome, Fall 2016 new members Alumnus IncorporAtes ΣΧ Ideals In ProfessIonal Career Sam Riber '89 on the Importance of Communication, Relationships t he moment sam riber '89 stepped into Lambda Chapter, he knew he was in the right place, and as he met more brothers during recruitment, he became more confident in his decision to join Sigma Chi. The ideals, principles, and life lessons he learned during his time at Lambda Chapter are traits he still uses today as a business professional, husband, and father of three. "Enjoy every minute of Lambda Chapter, because it goes by fast! Don't compromise studies for fun, or vice versa; you can balance both," he advises. "It's all about making the right choice at the right time." As an alumnus, Sam and his brothers have made a point of getting together and scheduling trips to various sporting events, golf trips, or Indiana football and basketball games. "Sigma Chi is forever a part of you. It's something you want to do. It allows you to reminisce about your college days and try to provide some guidance to the brothers in the Chapter House now," he said. Sam runs a sports marketing agency, Riber Spots Marketing Group, in Cincinnati, Ohio. The group develops national sports marketing campaigns and initiatives for brands like Head & Shoulders, Old Spice, and Dannon. A large part of his work revolves around the negotiation and fulfilment of endorsement contracts with athletes, and throughout the years, his work has included partnerships with Brett Favre, Troy Polamalu, Drew Brees, Cam Newton, Joe Mauer, John Madden, and Misty Copeland. During his 27-year span in the sports marketing industry, he has most enjoyed the people he's met and had the opportunity to work with. To Sam, the key to success is holding one's self accountable and maintaining the confidence and trust that's built through professional interactions. "Be thorough and don't cut corners. Be a good communicator. Know when to send an e-mail and when to pick up the phone," he said. "In business, the best way to cultivate relationships is by doing it face- to-face." Sam and his wife, Filio, have three children, Sam (a freshman at Indiana University), Nina, and Evie. In his free time, he enjoys golfing, running, attending sporting events, and spending time with his family. He also cheers on his daughter's ballet performances and swim meets, and does his best to see as many Sigma Chi brothers as possible each year. Sam lives in Cincinnati and can be reached at samriber@riberspots.com.
