sigmaChi 3 F or edward borneman iv '95, Greek life was more than a social hour. When he joined Sigma Chi, he immediately felt like part of a family and accepted his bid with no hesitation. Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, both Lambda alumni, he knew Sigma Chi was the best choice for him. "When I decided to attend Indiana University, I knew I wanted to shrink my world and be around people that were motivated to get more out of college than parties," he said. "Living and working in the fraternity taught me how to communicate and function with people who were different than me." One of Ed's favorite memories during his undergraduate years was working on the steering committee when Sigma Chi won the Little 5 bicycle race. He remembers the happiness and harmony the Chapter felt after the win, almost as if they had won a national championship. As an alumnus, Ed has kept up with some of his Fraternity brothers and enjoys meeting up with them at Nick's before Indiana ball games or holding get-togethers every couple of years. "We live in the age of social media," he said. "It's important to the life of the Chapter and Fraternity that alumni help current members take a step back to look at the big picture and to educate them on being responsible." For the last 20 years, Ed has worked in Los Angeles, Calif., as an editor and producer, creating trailers, television spots, commercials, music videos, and documentaries. He has worked on promoting movies such as Keeping Up with the Jones, The Wolf of Wall Street, Despicable Me, and Monsters, Inc. He has also worked on television shows such as Fargo, The Simpsons, People vs. O.J. Simpson, American Horror Story, and Jimmy Kimmel Live. In addition, he has done several commercials, including Cannes Lion award winner, Pepsi Perfect; the fictional product featured in Back to the Future II, which coincided with the 25th anniversary release of the movie. However, a true highlight of Ed's professional career was co-editing and producing the documentary, Life in a Walk, which debuted at the 16th annual Newport Beach Film Festival in 2015 and won an Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking award. "It was a great experience attending the film festivals and interacting with so many people who were moved by our story," he said. "I enjoyed hearing everyone else's stories and how the film affected them." Ed has found that he had to enjoy where he lived in order to enjoy what he does. After college, he packed up his car and moved to California, where he had no job and little money, but knew he could make a living if he worked harder and was more focused than those around him. He advises others to do the same. "Work harder than the people around you, find a mentor in your field whose work you admire, and offer to work for them for free," he said. "Don't be afraid to ask someone for help. Believe in yourself, have pride in your work, and treat people as you would want to be treated." Ed and his wife, Nicole, have two sons, Quint and Drew, and one daughter, Devyn. The family lives in Redondo Beach, Calif., where they spend their time outside near the ocean being active. Ed's work can be found at edborneman.com, and Life in a Walk is available on iTunes and Amazon.
