2 Jackson Real Estate Developer Stays Connected to Eta Chapter Spotlight on Breck Hines '01, Developer of e District at Eastover B reck Hines '01 doesn't have a secret to success, but rather a simple piece of advice: hard work pays off. "I've always believed that hard work puts you in a much better position to be lucky," Breck says. "I also believe that success is gained a little at a time, and many times you do not even realize it until looking back at seemingly inconsequential (at the time) events that were either turning points or building blocks toward something much larger." He serves as a principal of Duckworth Realty and as co- managing partner of The District Land Development Company, LLC, in Jackson, Mississippi. From The District's website (www.thedistrictateastover.com), the vision reads, "reimagining a more vibrant hometown." It includes a Marriott Residence Inn hotel, two Class A office buildings, The District Residential Lofts, and ground floor restaurant and retail space. "Our goal from the beginning was to create a generational asset that our city could be proud of and would add value to the surrounding areas—I think we will be successful in that regard," Breck says. Breck attributes many of the doors opened to him early on to older Sigma Chis, with whom he had networked. "The fraternity was a microcosm of the world after college—you had to learn to work together as a group to be successful, and, just like any family, there were great times and sad times, but we experienced them together," Breck says. "I cannot imagine those times without my brothers at Sigma Chi." Many life lessons were taught at Eta Chapter: personal responsibility, accountability, and leadership. But the most treasured aspect was the relationships he formed with brothers. "Many of my closest friends and colleagues today are brothers that I met during my years as a Sigma Chi," Breck says. He regularly sees brothers who reside in Jackson and reconvenes with those living across the southeast during football games in Oxford. Social media has also been a great tool in reconnecting. Breck and his wife, Lyn, have three children: Breck Jr., Hart, and Lucy. "Someone once told me that childhood is a depreciating asset, which was quite startlingly true, so most of my free time is spent with my kids as I try my hardest to capture the magical value of being their father during their childhood," Breck says. "It's one heck of a good time!" They enjoy activities together such as flying, golf, tennis, hunting, and fishing. You can contact him at breck@duckworthrealty.com. I n the fall of 1989, I was in my last year of college at the University of Arkansas. It was then that I decided to go into the ministry, specifically to minister to fraternity guys. Now 27 years later, I am still doing what I love most and that is ministering to frat stars! Around 10 years ago, I felt the need to develop some sort of curriculum that would challenge these boys to live like men. Studies had shown that boys were basically living like children until their mid- to late twenties. I did not feel like pledgeship did a good job of challenging them to embrace manhood. It was about this time that I received permission to use some of the material developed by a pastor out of Little Rock, Arkansas, and tailored it to a college series. It grew into a five-part series. The titles of the talks are: 1. Defining Manhood 2. A Man and the Way to Treat Women 3. A Man and His Decisions (how his decisions affect others around him) 4. A Man and His Money 5. A Man That Is Growing in Character and Integrity I really stress the fact that the man they are becoming in college will most likely be the man they are throughout life. You don't just live one way right now and then flip a switch and live another way. I help them understand that if they don't make some changes in some of the things they are doing, there is a good chance they will end of with a life of regrets. Now is the time to live like a man, not later. I videotaped the series, which can be viewed at greeklegacy.org; click on the manhood tab. Over the years, several fraternity members have told me that hearing these talks was the highlight of their pledge experience.
