W elcome to our second edition of The Standard Bearer. As I begin this version of "Notes from the Advisor," I'd like to thank Pennington & Company for helping us get this newsletter produced. It's been a pleasure working with them. We hope you are enjoying receiving these once again. NEW PLEDGE CLASS As we've announced, Eta Chapter completed our fall recruiting season by pledging 59 deserving young men. We are all excited to welcome them to Eta and Sigma Chi as part of our first class to go through Sigma Chi's new pledge program, Preparation for Brotherhood, or P4B. P4B PROGRAM The Preparation for Brotherhood (P4B) pledge program is our fraternity's marquee educational program of this biennium. It was launched at Balfour Leadership Training Workshop this past summer and is being implemented in every Sigma Chi chapter throughout North America this fall. P4B is more important than ever today to help shape the course of our new undergraduates and to show that Sigma Chi is leading the Greek world. This champions our values and ensures we have a hazing-free experience for all of our new recruits. During Balfour LTW, Grand Consul Mike Ursillo's state of the fraternity speech was devoted to the importance of P4B in today's challenging climate on college campuses whereby negative press swirls around Greek life. The implementation of P4B is also critical because it proves to each of us and to those around us that the Greek-letter system, and the fraternity in particular, accomplishes much good by making the world a better place to live through our enduring leadership. This program will ensure that our pledges are educated in a more uniform, comprehensive manner than ever before, learning about our history, traditions, and values through experiential learning. Like our ritual, our pledges will now be exposed to a universal experience, as each chapter will utilize the same program. Furthermore, P4B illustrates that, as Sigma Chis, we have rediscovered our roadmap to living our values and embraced our roots. Fully embracing the program and living our values will help us move away from all of the negative press and restore self-esteem and human dignity as inalienable rights for all our pledges. CHAPTER RECRUITMENT This is my sixth pledge class as your advisor and never have I been more proud of how our actives approached this year. Your chapter worked hard to get to know as many potential new members as possible. Though this process really challenged each brother concerning each new member's fitness for Eta, this past year has been a great growing experience and I'm very proud of our leadership for taking on every challenge presented them. We learned a great deal this year about our recruiting and bidding processes. Our class this year represents our traditional footprint very well but also addressed legacies better than most years. Forty percent of this class are legacies of Eta Chapter! That is a score of which we can all be proud. Just as we finish up this year of recruitment we will immediately begin again with the election of a new group of recruitment chairmen, followed by a spring semester class. If you know of anyone who is interested in becoming a Sigma Chi, please contact us and provide us with your candidate's contact information. This not only applies for the spring, but recruitment for fall 2017 as well. It is never too early to get your candidate's information to the chapter. I can't stress enough how important this is. We start the process of getting to know our potential new members in the spring and summer during orientation sessions. By the time school starts in August, we will have our eyes on our new class, so please do not wait to tell us that your son or grandson is coming to Ole Miss. Send his contact information to us as soon as you are able. Have a wonderful fall and holiday season. Come see us soon. In Hoc Signo Vinces, Jon T.
