Vol. 8WED. J Issue #155 www.DesertMessenger.com ULY 18, 2012 "Quartzsite's FREE Community Paper" 541-218-2560 Saturday's storm caused road closures, power outages | S BC Community Center Groundbreaking Ceremony planned by Shanana Rain Golden-Bear Quartzsite, Arizona - The Town of Quartzsite invites the community to attend the Groundbreaking Ceremony for the new Community Center on Thursday, July 26th at 9am. Groundbreaking ceremonies are an expression of optimism, hope for the future, and celebration. Speakers will include local and county offi cials along with community leaders. Despite published reports from for- mer mayor Ed Foster and Jennifer Jones, the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) has been awarded to The Town of Quartzsite for building the community center. In a recent meeting between Quartz- site Substance Abuse Prevention Co- The Gathering Place of Quartzsite for Good Food, Fun and Friendship! alition (QSAPC) members and Town Manager Alex Taft and Asst. Man- ager Al Johnson, it was revealed that certain unnamed individuals alleg- edly attempted to sabatoge the project through a slew of complaints to HUD. The Town then faced huge obstacles, including thousands of dollars not anti- picated, but worked as a team to accom- plish the required paperwork by the ap- pointed deadline. Excavation has begun for the 3600 sq. ft. building, however QSAPC members felt it's important to celebrate this new resource for the com- munity with a groundbreaking. Plans for the center include a meeting room, non-commercial kitchen, storage closet, restrooms and a 40x60 main area with a maximum occupancy of 389. The ceremony will take place at Town Park, just west of football fi eld, off E. Quail. Entrance on Chandler and Em- erald. Please join in the celebration of YOUR Community Center on Thurs- day, July 26th at 9am. There will be light refreshments following the cere- mony. If you need transportation call Town Hall at 928-927-4333. x FOOTBALL FIELD TOWN HALL Quartzsite, Arizona- Power was re- stored early Sunday morning after strong storms blew through Satur- day afternoon, affecting 69-kV power poles north of town. 2,374 customers were without power, Hwy. 95 at Ty- son Rd. was closed, and normally dry washes became raging rivers. The storm lowered temperatures to the mid 90's, a welcome relief after 120+ degrees the prior week. Town crews worked to clear the roads of de- bris and broken tree limbs.
