ByJonathanLemire The Associated Press NEW YORK DonaldTrump blurted out lewd and sex- ually charged comments about women as he waited to make a cameo appear- ance on a soap opera in 2005. The Republican pres- idential nominee issued a rare apology Friday, "if any- one was offended." Trump bragged about kissing, groping and trying to have sex with women who were not his wife on audio and video recordings obtained by The Washing- ton Post and NBC News. The celebrity businessman boasted "when you're a star, they let you do it," in a con- versation with Billy Bush, then a host of the television show "Access Hollywood." The remarks were cap- tured by a live microphone that Trump did not appear to know was recording their conversation. In a statement released by his campaign, Trump said: "This was locker room banter, a private conversa- tion that took place many years ago. Bill Clinton has said far worse to me on the golf course — not even close. I apologize if anyone was offended." The comments came two days before the Republican nominee meets Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton for their second presidential debate, and as he confronts a series of stories about his past comments about women and tries to move beyond remarks shaming a former Miss Universe for gaining weight. The 2005 remarks were recorded months after the reality TV star married his third wife, Melania. He is heard bemoaning that he tried and failed to seduce an unidentified woman, saying, "I moved on her and I failed, I'll admit." "I did try and f—- her. She was married," Trump said. "And I moved on her very heavily. In fact, I took her out furniture shopping. She wanted to get some furni- ture. I said, 'I'll show you where they have some nice furniture.'" Trump said he "moved on her like bitch" and then made a crass remark about the woman's breast im- plants. Then, after seeing the actress Arianne Zucker on the set of the soap opera on which he was to appear, he said he needed some breath mints "just in case I start kissing her." "You know I'm automati- cally attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It's like a magnet. Just kiss. I don't even wait," Trump said. "And when you're a star they let you do it. You can do anything." He added: "Grab them by the p——. You can do any- thing." The comments, which ap- peared to condone sexual as- sault, wereswiftlycondemned by Clinton's campaign. "This is horrific. We can- not allow this man to be- come president," Clinton posted on her campaign's Twitter account. Earlier this week, Trump dismissed questions about his history of vulgarity, telling a television station in Nevada that "a lot of that was done for the pur- pose of entertainment." He added: "And I can tell you this, there's nobody — no- body — that has more re- spect for women than I do." Trump has a long history of making lewd and highly sexual comments toward and about women. The As- sociated Press reported this week that during his years as a reality TV star on the "The Apprentice," the GOP nominee repeatedly de- meaned women with sex- ist language, rating female contestants by the size of their breasts and talking about which ones he'd like to have sex with. During frequent in- terviews with shock jock Howard Stern in the 1990s, Trump made a long list of demeaning comments, say- ing that he could have had sex with Diana, princess of Wales, who had recently been killed in a car crash, and declaring that "A per- son who is very flat-chested is very hard to be a 10." He has repeatedly called the comedian Rosie O'Donnell a "pig" and "slob" and suggested she'd be less depressed if she stopped looking in the mirror. 2016 CAMPAIGN Trump caught on video making lewd remarks about women EVANVUCCI—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during a town hall in Sandown, N.H. By Deb Riechmann The Associated Press WASHINGTON The U.S. bluntly accused Russia on Friday of hacking Amer- ican political sites and email accounts in an ef- fort to interfere with the upcoming presidential election. In a one-two punch, the United States also di- rectly accused Russia of war crimes in Syria. Moscow dismissed the accusations, which signif- icantly worsen U.S.-Russia relations that already had deteriorated to the lowest point in years. Russian of- ficials called the hacking allegations "some kind of nonsense" and said the war crimes talk was sim- ply an effort to divert at- tention from America's own failure to uphold a cease-fire in the bloody war. The White House de- clined to say whether the hacking accusation would trigger sanctions against Russia. A senior Obama administration official said the U.S. would re- spond "at a time and place of our choosing." The official said the public wouldn't necessar- ily know what actions the U.S. has already taken or will take against Rus- sia involving cyberspace. The official wasn't au- thorized to comment by name and requested an- onymity. "This is a huge deal," said Michael Morell, the former deputy and act- ing director of the Cen- tral Intelligence Agency. "I can't think of any time in our history where we have blamed another gov- ernment for trying to in- terfere with our elections. ... This is unprecedented across the board." Late Friday, the U.S. De- partment of Homeland Se- curity and the Office of the Director of National Intel- ligence accused Russia of hacking American politi- cal sites. "These thefts and dis- closures are intended to interfere with the US elec- tion process. Such activity is not new to Moscow," a statement by the two agen- cies said. "The Russians have used similar tactics and techniques across Eu- rope and Eurasia, for ex- ample, to influence pub- lic opinion there. We be- lieve, based on the scope and sensitivity of these efforts, that only Russia's senior-most officials could have authorized these ac- tivities." Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed the U.S. statement but didn't deny Russia's in- volvement. "Every day there are tens of thousands of at- tacks on Putin's website. Many of the attacks can be traced to the U.S.," Pes- kov was quoted as telling the Interfax news agency. "We're not blaming the White House or Langley every time," he added, re- ferring to the Virginia city where the CIA is based. Earlier Friday, Secre- tary of State John Kerry said that Russian and Syrian military strikes against civilians and medical facilities in Syria should be investigated as war crimes. The situa- tion in Syria has dramat- ically worsened since the collapse of a U.S.-Russia- brokered cease-fire two weeks ago.
