Volleyball FROM PAGE 1 Ryan Newman two years ago advanced into the championship race through points racing in- stead of chasing wins. Dil- lon understands there's a strategy that can be fol- lowed for success in the Chase. Everyone wants to get through Charlotte and Kansas next week in solid shape to not have their fate decided at Talladega. As the only RCR driver in the Chase, he's got the organization behind him. "I had multiple guys come up to me in the shop this week telling me how proud they were and proud to be a part of RCR," Dillon said. "You saw what Ryan Newman was able to do a couple of years ago and go to Homestead. (Newman crew chief) Luke Lambert came up to me and said, 'Man, you guys are built for this just like we made our run.' I hope we can back it up and keep ourselves rel- evant." Pence grounded out to seal an early edge for a Cubs team that romped to 103 victories and send the crowd into group song. The Giants came up short in the ninth but the breakthrough needed to come earlier against Jon Lester. Despite creating opportunities, they were not successful. The Cubs left-hander needed just 86 pitches to hold the Giants scoreless in eight innings. Cueto was masterful while dotting his fastball and dusting the Cubs' pa- tient lineup by getting them to chase a changeup seemingly borrowed from Pedro Martinez's hall closet. Cueto held the Cubs to three hits, did not walk a batter and struck out 10. Four of those strikeouts came on changeups out of the zone. He even re- corded a full-count strike- out of Ben Zobrist, one of two players (along with the Giants' Joe Panik) who drew more walks than they struck out this season. But Baez ruined his night. Cueto hit for himself with two outs and the bases empty in the eighth — a rally likely would have compelled Bruce Bochy to pinch hit for his pitcher — and then retired Jason Heyward on a pop-up to begin the bottom of the inning. But he could not get Baez to chase a 1-2 pitch off the plate, and the next one caught far too much of it. The Giants received no lasting benefits from Cue- to's masterful start, nor were they able to cele- brate a series of tremen- dous defensive plays from two players who started be- cause Bochy stuck with his platoons in center field and second base. Established players De- nard Span and Joe Panik took a seat for Gorkys Her- nandez and Kelby Tom- linson, two players who mostly plied their trade for the Sacramento River Cats this season. Hernandez made a div- ing catch on the track to take an extra-base hit away from David Ross in the third inning. Tomlin- son made a sliding stop to rob Zobrist in the fourth, which saved a run. Tom- linson also covered more than 25 feet on the outfield grass while playing a shift to collect Anthony Rizzo's grounder and throw him out. On the third pitch of the game, the Giants re- vealed part of their strat- egy against Lester. Her- nandez pushed a bunt up the first base line that got past the pitcher, which was just as well given that Les- ter throws to bases with a greased hand. Hernandez reached safely and survived knock- ing knees with Baez, but Ross, the Cubs' catcher, easily threw him out while trying to steal. Hernan- dez's only shot was a swim move in the dirt that didn't help him avoid Addison Russell's tag. The Giants had the lead- off man aboard in each of the first three innings. Hunter Pence beat out an infield single but was stranded at second base when Tomlinson grounded back to the mound. Conor Gillaspie singled to start the third and Cueto squared to bunt, but Les- ter threw so far outside he effectively pitched out, and Ross made a snap throw to pick off the runner. Lester was under duress in the fourth inning after Buster Posey singled and Angel Pagan hit a double that scooted under Ben Zo- brist's shoestring attempt in left field. Posey ran on the two-out contact but stopped short of second base for a beat, perhaps fearing he'd get thrown out at third if Zobrist had kept the ball in front of him. Posey ended up at third, and the brief hesitation re- moved any chance of third base coach Roberto Kelly waving Posey home. Lester managed to es- cape, getting Crawford to ground out to strand two.
