OCTOBER 5-11, 2016 UCW 21 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Exploring Local Haunts a STAFF REPORT It happens every year. October rolls around and all manner of ghosts, ghouls and zombies show up at haunted trails, forests, cemeteries and houses in the area, just waiting for fresh blood. And every year, the people of Fayetteville and the surrounding area show up in droves for these hair-raising, spine-tingling events. Whether you prefer your spooks and hauntings indoors or out, there is a place for you in this year's celebration of terror, creepiness and the undead. Here are a few of this seasons highlights. The Stoney Point Trail of Terror is a longstanding tradition in Cumberland County — 13 years and counting to be exact. A true assault on the senses, the trail starts with a stage show before attendees are released into the woods behind the Stoney Point Fire Department to confront zombies, torture scenes and more. While the equipment is state-of-the-art, it's the live actors who make this haunted trail special. Monsters, zombies, clowns and more await at every turn. The trail is open Oct. 7,8, 14, 15, 21, 22, 28, 29, 30 and 31. For more information, visit http://stoneypointfire.com/trail. Oct. 27-29, the Dogwood Fall Festival offers up the finest things about fall and harvest season. With three different haunted experiences: Historic Hauntings; a Haunted Asylum; and historical hayrides, the Fall Festival also includes Bands and Brews. That's two days of live music, food trucks and craft and domestic brews (as well as wine) to go with all that tasty grub. The hauntings run all three days, each with a unique twist. Historic Hauntings takes guests on a walking tour of Cross Creek Cemetery's Section II, where reenactors and storytellers recount the creepy details of Fayetteville's past. Tickets are $10. The Lafayette Insane Asylum is a haunted maze designed with thrill seekers in mind. Insanity is the operative word here. Admission is $10, or bring a canned good donation, and join the craziness for $9. Proceeds benefit Fishing to Fight Cancer. The hayrides aren't haunted, but they are interesting. Take a narrated tour of downtown and learn some of Fayetteville's secrets as the guide recounts tales of historical events and places. Tickets are $5. The festivities include also food trucks (Saturday only, from 3-10 p.m.), music, domestic and craft brews and more. Traditional food vendors are on site Friday. Local and regional performers own the stage on Friday, with Brett Young and Chase Bryant performing on Saturday. At 621 Autry Highway in Roseboro, the trail has three flavors of fear: The Asylum; Blackout and Bozo's Mad House. Pick one, or all three, for a chilling experience you won't soon forget. The trail is open Oct. 7,8,9, 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, 23, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31 and Nov. 4 and 5. For more information, visit www.vhtxl.com. In Linden, forget trails, cemeteries and asylums, and just go straight to hell at the Devil's Playground, where organizers say the best chance of getting out in one piece is to outrun your fellow travelers, so don't come in flip flops or high heels. Concessions are available onsite — because you can really work up and appetite running for your life. Haunt tickets are $15. Zombie Arena tickets are $10. A combination ticket is $20. For more information, visit http:// devilsplaygroundhaunt.com/tickets.html. There are plenty of local haunted events just waiting to thrill you this month. NEED FALL CLASSES? It's not too late!
