BenjaminFranklinen- countered Mrs. Powel fol- lowing the Constitutional Convention in Philadel- phia. "Well, Doctor, what have we got — a repub- lic or a mon- archy," she asked. "A republic, madam," he responded, "if you can keep it." Eric Metaxas' latest, If You Can Keep It, a play on Franklin's 1787 statement, features a thesis both sim- ple and sweeping. America is a chosen people second only to Israel, a city on a hill, as patriots from John Winthrop to Ronald Rea- gan adapt the words of the Biblical Isaiah. Metaxas believes all our greatness — from the abolition of slavery to becoming the greatest exporter of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness under God — was achieved in terms of our God-given faith in this destiny. He holds its near implosion began in the 1960s and has just about played itself out to our de- struction. I have not yet read the book, but I know Metaxas to be a brilliant and articulate voice as well as an astute cultural observer. I have listened to him discuss it over ra- dio and I look forward to reading it whether or not I agree with him. I do not agree with him on this one. We bailed on God- breathed identity and des- tiny long before the six- ties. In the City on a Hill the God-King was wor- shipped and obeyed with- out rivals — including our God-given ingenuity. The principal sign was treat- ing all our one-anothers as God treats us. Our Pu- ritan forebears knew and said as much, although they and the rest of us of- ten strayed. The farther we walked the more we tended to interpret gift as entitlement. We enslaved, exiled and executed Na- tive Americans — "civi- lizing" them just because they were blocking our path. We fought the blood- iest war in our history and freed slaves only to leave them to Jim Crow in the South and a less violent but equally virulent rac- ism in the North. These conditions were addressed periodically in the Great Awakenings of the eighteenth, nine- teenth, and twentieth cen- turies. Repentance and re- turn to the God who alone creates cities on hills is the only antidote and — to our credit — we do keep awakening and repenting. We have become the most open society on earth and authentic racial harmony has bloomed beginning with the Christian faith- fueled civil rights move- ments of the fifties and six- ties; this despite current ef- forts to stir race hatred by progressive elements who smell money and power in hate and suspicion. It is true that our educa- tional and cultural engines have been dominated by the Left since the sixties. It is reality that bashing our nation and the faith in which it was born is the bloodsport of these dom- inators since that time, and they never let true his- tory distract them. Their blind hatred coupled with frustration over the utter failure of programs such as the War on Poverty — which increased poverty and trainwrecked poor families — has led them to ignore truth that the same spirit that sent men to the moon and dramatically in- creased human lifespans through medical and ag- ricultural breakthroughs available to all — is the spirit that has brought freedom and peace to un- told millions around the world — and challenged them to keep it. Yet worshipping Man- ifest Destiny itself — in- stead of the One call- ing us to that destiny — led us to promise support for freedom movements worldwide and simultane- ously squelch such move- ments throughout Central and South America from 1900 through the sixties — Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Cuba come to mind. We encouraged rebellion against Soviet domination in Hungary (1956) and Czechoslovakia (1968) and wrung our hands instead of keeping promises while freedom fighters were butchered. The move to re- place truth with political correctness began in the sixties but came as a reac- tion to more than a cen- tury of broken promises. Today we face assault from militant Islam — not because of our corruption, which is real and rampant, but due entirely to their blind hatred of anyone not as straight-jacketed as themselves. Our solution remains the same — and as Biblical as the run-up to previous Awakenings. It is to re-focus our attention on the Abba who makes us, the Son who redeems us, and the empowering Holy Spirit. Part of the practi- cal outfall will be to let go of our own hatred and fear that would ban guns on one hand and whole eth- nic and religious groups on the other. Another dimen- sion will permit us to pro- file those who come here to seek promise fulfilled and eliminate the bad ap- ples while embracing the authentic. In that repen- tance we fulfill God's most famous dictate — to act justly, love kindness, and walk humbly with Him. GODTALK A republic, madam, if you can keep it Jim Wilson By Kori Tuitt Lowell Sun LOWELL,MASS. Thousands of people lined up between the pews of the Immaculate Conception Church to see the heart of St. Padre Pio Wednesday. Some stood in line with their cameras out, others with rosary beads in hand. Some whispered a prayer before coming face to face with the relic. At the front of the church was an image of St. Padre Pio with lit can- dles and red flowers sprin- kled with baby's breath decorating the front of the church. Whentheyfinallyreached the heart of St. Padre Pio, someheldtheglasscasefora few seconds, others kneeled to the floor and many kissed the glass. Thosesittingandkneeling in the pews prayed in uni- son — some with their heads bowed and eyes closed, oth- ers with their cellphones out to capture a photo of the en- cased relic. "Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death," they said. All ages came through the church doors Wednes- day, from infants in stroll- ers to elders in wheelchairs. JanetBlack,fromCharles- town, said she did not want to miss her once-in-a-life- time opportunity to see this relic. "I'm all full of emotions," said Black, as her eyes wa- tered. "It's just beautifulthat people could come together for one purpose. If the world was like this, we'd have no problems." Ed Waterworth of Dra- cut said he has seen relics before, but nothing of this magnitude. "This is our faith. Saints are our intercession to God." Waterworth said. "We know miracles have been per- formed through them. Marisa Luongo of Wake- field said the whole experi- ence was overwhelming. "I love St. Padre Pio and I love the Catholic Church," she said. "It's a great honor to be here. The world needs this." This is the first time the saint's heart has left Italy to come to the United States, according to Rev. Paul Soper oftheArchdioceseofBoston. He said more than 3,000 people came to see the relic. St. Padre Pio was a Ca- puchin friar best known for possessing the stigmata, or wounds of Jesus Christ, and was said to have special gifts from God. He died in Fog- gia, Italy, in 1968 where his heartisnormallykeptinSan Giovanni Rotondo. He was canonizedbyPopeJohnPaul II in 2002. "A devotion to Padre Pio is very deeply rooted in our ethnic communities and our immigration population," said Soper. "He was a man of deep prayer. It is estimated he heard over 5 million con- fessions.Heisknownforfor- giving sins and taking care of the poor." Rev. Nicholas Sannella, pastor of the Immaculate Conception Church in Low- ell, said being near the relic isawaytobeclosertoasaint who is already with God. "Padre Pio, he embraced the very core of our faith," Sannella said. "He embraced harmony, forgivenessofsins, he spent his life in the con- fessionalandhewasamodel for many of us. Students in the fourth through eighth grades from the Immaculate Conception School just down the block, attended the Mass, which began at noon. Principal Cathy Fiorino said she was lucky enough to go to Italy and see the relic before. "This is a once-in-a-life- time event," said Fiorino said. "He was a gift to the church. He was known for his confessional and he was a very holy man. The city of Lowell is blessed." People traveled from around the world to be able to see this relic. Some, like Florence Cur- ran of Reading, learned about St. Padre Pio growing up, while others like Adri- anne Niall of Littleton are learning more about him later in life. But both say they did not want to miss the chance to witness the relic of a special and mar- velous saint. "I just look at their faces and they're drawn to this," Sopersaid."Theydidn'thave to be here today, it's a beau- tiful day."
