Special Edition Chi Zetagram 8 TOUR OUR NEW HOME! Details on the Features of the New House B rothers, after years of planning, improving, and refining we're now ready to share with you the final plans for our new chapter house! Here's an overview, and we look forward to showing you more in person at this fall's Homecoming and, of course, the Fall 2017 house dedication event. QUALITY CONSTRUCTION With lessons learned from the 1977 addition, we insisted that our new home must be top-notch, commercial-grade construction, both in techniques and materials. Rest assured that no corners were cut, but just the opposite. For example, with exception of decorative gables, the full exterior is clad in brick, not high-maintenance stucco or siding. Inside the structure is full steel support and concrete on steel floors. Because the interior walls are not load bearing, we'll have great flexibility in the future for changes to stay in tune with evolving needs. And all of the finishes are chosen for durability, to stand up to the fraternity's needs. GREAT SITE PLAN Keeping the beautiful front yard intact was tough, but we did it! And now we're adding a huge elevated deck overlooking Arbor Street, which we hope to connect to a basketball court and patio below. This is all possible because the expanded parking is moved indoors or under cover, leaving our yard open for continued enjoyment. Lambda Chi has what might be the best location and property of any fraternity at Illinois, and we're making the most of it while retaining the beauty and functionality we've all enjoyed. FORMAL FRONT ROOMS We're re-instating a formal front room, but with a new focus. Modeled after the formal studies of the Illini Union, the room will be furnished with couches and arm chairs for quiet study. But it will retain the features most important to us all; entering through the restored original front doorway, you'll see the iconic stone coat of arms over a large fireplace, and the views of Washington Park out the large front windows. And we're recreating an arched portal at the south end. Also off an expanded foyer area will be a new library, and a separate alumni room housing memorabilia. Available for study, these rooms can also be used for small group meetings and conferencing. NEW GATHERING AND RELAXATION AREAS Men returning from class or gathering before meals can socialize in the great new recreation room, just off the main entry hall. And this space is connected to the dining hall/chapter room and the large outdoor deck, creating opportunities for interaction and fraternalism that our old house could never provide. EXPANDED KITCHEN AND DINING The new kitchen and dining hall are sized to support the larger on- campus membership of Chi Zeta today and in the future. A flexible serving area adds efficiency and limited all-day support, while the dining hall is configured to support formal chapter meetings. The hall opens onto the patio as well, to allow men to enjoy dining together outdoors in good weather. MODERN LIVING SPACES We insisted that the living spaces of our new chapter house function as a fraternity, not a rooming house or apartment often seen in a college town. But the new design also provides all of the competitive amenities that prospective members will expect today. The suite rooms are large, and divided into separate study/living areas and sleeping rooms. That way, one roommate can sleep while another studies late or relaxes. And the suites are all unique, with different layouts and special features. Lower Level First Floor
