The Musings of Pitt Dickey Man of La Mancha at CFRT Givens Performing Arts Center Cirque Montage Don't Miss theWorld's Biggest Homecoming by DAN DEBRULER The word "Homecoming" can spark a number of different images. For a high school or university, homecoming may include the tradition of inviting alumni back to campus for heritage or sporting events. For a church, the tradition of a homecoming is similar to a family reunion, welcoming retired Pastors, members who have moved away, and current members and their families to celebrate the founding of the church, or simply a time of reliving yesterday's memories while inspiring everyone with hope for the future. But what is a Radio Homecoming? In the case of WCLN-FM and WGQR- FM, homecoming is a little of all the above. While the station has hosted celebrations before, Saturday, Sept. 10 will mark the first time in the 22-year history of WCLN-FM the station has invited the community to come celebrate the heritage of broadcasting the Good News. Founded in 1994 by George Wilson of Clinton, North Carolina, and his family, WCLN-FM began as the fulfillment of a promise and a wish by the late Mrs. Jackie Wilson. Longtime supporters of Christian missions at home and abroad, Jackie and her husband George wanted to bring a full-time Christian radio station to Sampson County and the surrounding area. So they did. With what was likely a bit of influence from the couple's four children, the station took the message of the Gospel to the airwaves with a mix of contemporary Christian music and teaching programs in July of 1994. Through nearly two-and-a-half decades of growth, moves and upgrades, the station has continued the tradition of "Keeping the Main Thing the Main Thing" for tens of thousands of daily listeners claiming Fayetteville, Clinton, Dunn, and the surrounding towns and counties home. Along the way, George was blessed to acquire a pair of radio stations based in Elizabethtown. One of those was WGQR-FM, an oldies and beach station serving locals and seasonal White Lake inhabitants with music they could reminisce to. Immediately following its acquisition, the station was reformatted as a Southern Gospel music station, serving up memories of another kind. Shortly after going on the air in 2006, WGQR's frequency of 105.7 became eligible for a rare upgrade in the wake of a distant station relinquishing some territory to accomplish an upgrade of their own. The fortunate change allowed for a significant increase in power, and a move that would find Gospel fans in Fayetteville, Lumberton, Clinton and dozens or nearby communities with a new, clear, Southern Gospel radio station of their own. On Saturday, Sep. 10 the stations are inviting the entire community – listeners or not – to a homecoming to commemorate the 10th Anniversary of Christian 105.7 and the continued community outreach of Christian 107.3. Hosted at Hubb's Farm on Highway 421 near Spivey's Corner, the "World's Biggest Homecoming" includes live entertainment, a Cook- Off and Corn Hole Tournament, $2 Bar-B-Que meals while they last, and a free trip through the 2016 Hubb's Corn Maze. Gates open at 11a.m., and the All Veterans Parachute Team will fly in a giant American at 1 p.m., followed by a "Air Drop" for prizes for kids of all ages. The event wraps up at 6 p.m. and is free to attend. DAN DEBRULER WCLN Station Manager, Contributing Writer. COMMENTS? Editor@ upandcomingweekly.com. 910.484.6200
