They wrote kind words of appreciation to their favorite teachers and thanked them for their service. SERRF THANKS, TEACHERS FAIRFAX, VIRGINIA Bri- anna Tackmier, a student at Red Bluff High School, has been selected to rep- resent Red Bluff as a Na- tional Youth Correspondent to the Washington Journal- ism and Media Conference at George Mason University July 10-15. Tackmier joins a select group of students from all over the country for an in- tensive study of journal- ism and media. Tackmier was chosen based on ac- ademic accomplishments and a demonstrated in- terest and excellence in journalism and media studies. National Youth Corre- spondents participate in hands-on, experiential learning through deci- sion-making simulations that challenge them to solve problems and ex- plore the creative, practi- cal, and ethical tensions inherent in journalism and media. The experiential portion of the program is comple- mented by speakers who are well-known leaders in the media community. Presenters include prominent journalists, CEOs of major media out- lets, researchers, and re- cent college graduates successfully entering the field. Past speakers have in- cluded Hoda Kotb from NBC, Brian Lamb from C-SPAN, Pulitzer Prize winning photographer Carol Guzy, and Sonya Ross from the Associated Press. With distinguished faculty, guest speak- ers and direct access to elite D.C. practitioners, the Washington Jour- nalism and Media Con- ference offers aspiring journalists and student leaders an unparalleled experience. The week long program, held at George Mason Uni- versity's state-of-the-art campus, will encourage and inspire young leaders from across the country who desire a unique expe- rience focused on success- ful careers in this dynamic industry. JOURNALISM Tackmier will travel to D.C. for conference REDDING Shasta College will be hosting a Black His- tory Month program that will feature events through- out the day starting at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 18 on campus in room 812, where a short video about African American astronaut Leland Melvin will take place. The video will be fol- lowed at 4 p.m. by a poetry workshop on the balcony room of the library with Brandon Leake, the keynote speaker for the evening pro- gram. Activities for the eve- ning program will begin at 6 p.m. inside the cafeteria on the student stage and will include various com- munity speakers, "Name that Tune" game, and spo- ken word performance by Leake, followed by dinner and dancing, with music from Power 94. REDDING Shasta College Black History month NEWBERG, OREGON More than 850 traditional under- graduate students earned dean's list recognition at George Fox University in the fall of 2015, including Tess Jones of Red Bluff, who is a freshman studying mar- keting. Students must earn a 3.5 grade point average or above on 12 or more hours of graded work to earn a spot on the dean's list. George Fox University is ranked by Forbes among the top Christian universi- ties in the country and is a Christian college classified by U.S. News & World Re- port as a first-tier regional university. More than 3,900 stu- dents attend classes on the university's campus in Newberg, Oregon, and at teaching centers in Port- land, Salem and Redmond, Oregon. George Fox offers bache- lor's degrees in more than 40 majors, degree-comple- tion programs for working adults, six seminary de- grees, and 13 master's and doctoral degrees. GEORGE FOX UNIVERSITY Tess Jones named to dean's list The Associated Press PALO ALTO Stanford Uni- versity's governing board has named a neuroscien- tist who leads a prestigious graduate school in New York City as the California university's next president. The Board of Trustees announced that Marc Tes- sier-Lavigne, president of The Rockefeller University, will become Stanford's 11th president on Sept. 1. Tessier- Lavigne will succeed Pres- ident John Hennessy, who plans to return to teaching and research this summer after almost 16 years at the university's helm. Tessier-Lavigne was a professor at Stanford from 2001 to 2005. He was the chief scientific officer at biotechnology company Ge- nentech before he assumed the presidency of The Rock- efeller University in March 2011.
