In an exclusive interview with this publication Monday, Joe Montes declared he is seeking to represent California's 1st Con- gressional District. He becomes the second Republican to chal- lenge two-term U.S. Rep. Doug LaMalfa, R-Richvale, after Red- ding attorney Doug Wright an- nounced his candidacy Jan. 20. This will be the first full cam- paign for Montes, 60, who briefly ran for Chico City Council in 2014. Montes said he is frustrated by what has become a one-party system in Washington, D.C. The large Northern California dis- trict and the nation face prob- lems bigger than the Beltway, he said. Meanwhile, he wants to en- sure that local residents are rep- resented by their congressman, including seeking federal fund- ing for projects. "I have things that I offer that I don't see out there," Mon- tes said. He favored lower taxes and getting the government out of the way of business. Mon- tes noted that regulations such as the methane gas tax on cat- tle can have a harmful financial impact. Looking to boost job growth, he supported seeking a way to re- duce the trade deficit with other nations and cutting foreign tar- iffs levied on agricultural prod- ucts grown in the north state. RED BLUFF Members of the community met Wednesday evening for a neighborhood watch meeting at the Sunrise Bible Fellowship to discuss con- cerns with crime in the area and ways to prevent it. Residents from the neighbor- hood surrounding the church, along with those from other neighborhoods in Red Bluff, joined together to share their stories and discuss tips on pre- venting and reporting crime. Arielle Golden and some of her neighbors were upset about what has been going on, so they decided to start a neighborhood watch, she said. "We are just not going to stand for it anymore," Golden said. She said she hopes the group will get neighbors to work together to prevent crime. Red Bluff Police Officer Matt Coker joined the conversation and said the main thing resi- dents can do is call the police department when anything out of the ordinary is witnessed. The department's number is 527-3131. Coker said using curtains in a home is a great way to de- ter criminals from attempting to enter, because they are less likely to see what is inside. "When a criminal can see in- side a home, and they see for in- stance a big flat screen televi- sion, they are more likely to try to enter the home," Coker said. Keeping garage doors closed when not in use is important to prevent a burglar from seeing what you own. By Heather Hoelscher hhoelscher@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Heather on Twitter RED BLUFF The Public Works Department requested addi- tional funding, in the amount of $49,475, Tuesday at the Red Bluff City Council meeting for improve- ments needed to complete the re- construction of the shuttered air- port restaurant. With the approval of the change orders the contractor has estimated a completed construc- tion date to be by the fourth week in February, said Public Works Director Bruce Henz. A re-open- ing date has not been set. Resident Lynn Chamblin said she was proud of Henz for mak- ing the restaurant what it is to- day. "I like to see that we are doing whatever we can to start bringing in funds for the airport," Cham- blin said. Funding also will go toward the internal needs of a restau- rant, including stoves and grid- dles, ice machines, toaster and other items totalling $10,483 of the $49,475, Henz said. Working on the project during the recent wet weather has caused water on the roof to leak through to the first floor, Henz said. This has necessitated $13,050 for re- pair of the roof. RED BLUFF Airport restaurant reopening in sight Staff report RED BLUFF The Tehama County Sheriff's Office dive team and Te- hama County Search and Rescue continued the search Thursday for Stefan Dekker, 35, who was reported missing Wednesday by his friend. The friend reported that Dekker had not been seen nor heard from since Monday and said this was unusual behav- ior for him. The friend reported Dekker's vehicle was also miss- ing. At about 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dekker's vehicle and dog were located parked on private prop- erty in the 18000 block of Red Bank Road west of Red Bluff, ac- cording to a press release from the Tehama County Sheriff's Of- fice. The vehicle was parked near a pond on the property. Deputies located an over- turned boat on the pond, accord- ing to the release, and Dekker's dog and some personal items were found at the pond. The California Highway Patrol air support and sheriff's deputies conducted a preliminary search when Dekker was reported miss- ing. Deputies searched around the area until the pond was no longer visible, but Dekker was not located. The search continues with the pond as the focus of the search, the press release said. Deputies are dedicating their resources toward that search and are con- ducting further investigation into the matter.
