ByJillColvin The Associated Press EXETER, N.H. Stung by his second-place finish in Iowa, Donald Trump is fac- ing new pressure to prove he can translate his mas- sive crowds and poll leads into election wins. And his team appeared intent to demonstrate on Thursday that they'd learned from any past mistakes. Trump's campaign in- creased the day's planned events for New Hampshire from two to five — the most he'd ever advertised on the trail. He visited with local business owners, answer- ing questions and signing autographs, then offered a pep talk to several dozen local police. That was in addition to two of his usual large-scale events, less than a week before next Tuesday's pri- mary. A handful of reporters were also invited into his campaign headquarters to chat with staff and volun- teers as he held a private meeting — a move that would have been unheard of in Iowa, where his team imposed a strict "radio si- lence" policy and shrouded its operation in secrecy. Trump has blamed his second-place finish in Iowa on a long list of factors, in- cluding, at times of reflec- tion, his own missteps. He's conceded he could have done better if he'd spent more time and money in the state. "You know, I think in ret- rospect we should have had a better ground game," he said in an interview this week on MSNBC. Trump's New Hamp- shire organization has, for months, appeared more robust than the opera- tion he'd put together in Iowa. He's racked up doz- ens of endorsements, and his Manchester campaign headquarters is large and brimming with staff and volunteers placing calls. His organization was on display at a town hall event Thursday morning in Ex- eter, where Trump was pre- ceded by a long list of local officials who have offered their endorsements. Trump remains far ahead in polls in the state, which is generally consid- ered far friendlier turf for the billionaire business- men. The electorate tends to favor more moderate candidates, making him a more natural fit than he was in evangelical-domi- nated Iowa, despite his ef- forts to appeal to the group. But the pressure to per- form could be even greater now, as Trump works to prove that his poll num- bers and crowds can trans- late into votes. A failure to finish in the top position here could be a devastating blow, giving new momen- tum to senators Ted Cruz of Texas and Marco Rubio of Florida, Iowa's first- and third-place finishers. It's hard to gauge whether Trump, who plays an unusually central role in organizing and funding his own campaign, feels signif- icant pressure to up his ef- forts. Asked about his ground game at his campaign headquarters Thursday, Trump appeared content to stay his course. "I feel fine I mean, we have what we have," he told reporters after greet- ing volunteers. He pointed to the recep- tion he'd been getting, in- cluding the town hall in Exeter, where rowdy sup- porters squished into the historic Exeter Town Hall building like sardines. "People like us, we seem to be doing very well. You know, here it's a little bit less about a ground game," he added. "Here you go out and you pull a trigger, and you come back. You don't sit around for an hour and a half." And while his team worked to increase his visi- bility on Thursday, his visit wasn't long. Trump, who was in Lit- tle Rock, Arkansas, on Wednesday for a rally there, will be back out of the state on Friday to hold a rally in Florence, South Carolina. That state will hold its primary later this month. Is he still confident about New Hampshire? "I think we're going to do well here. I mean, I think we're going to do well. Do you have to? No you don't have to, but I think we're going to do well," he said. He appeared in an even better mood at the business stop, where he signed auto- graphs and posed for pho- tos. "It feels good, doesn't it?" he says. "It feels like we're going to do well on Febru- ary 9th." ELECTION 2016 Trumpcampaignshowsa different side a er Iowa loss ROBERTF.BUKATY—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump thinks he is "going to do well" in New Hampshire, the second contest for presidential hopefuls. DAVID GOLDMAN — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt, and Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton spar during a Democratic presidential primary debate at the University of New Hampshire on Thursday. The state's primary is Tuesday. By Nancy Benac and Lisa Lerer The Associated Press DURHAM, N.H. Fireworks flying in their first one-on- one debate, Hillary Clin- ton accused Bernie Sand- ers Thursday night of sub- jecting her to an "artful smear" while Sanders sug- gested the former secre- tary of state was a captive of America's political estab- lishment. The two Democrats em- braced a markedly more contentious tone than when they last debated before the year's presidential voting began in Iowa, and it sig- naled how the race for the nomination has tightened five days ahead of the first- in-the-nation primary in New Hampshire next Tues- day. The two argued over ideas, over tactics and over who has the liberal creden- tials to deliver on an agenda of better access to health care, more affordable col- lege, fighting income in- equality and more. It was Clinton who was the main aggressor, saying Sanders could never achieve his ambitious and costly proposals. Then she took after the Vermont senator for his efforts to cast her as beholden to Wall Street in- terests because of the cam- paign donations and speak- ing fees she's accepted from the financial sector. "It's time to end the very artful smear that you and your campaign have been carrying out," she said. Sanders, for his part, sug- gested Clinton's loyalties were colored by a reliance on big corporate donors. "Secretary Clinton does represent the establish- ment," he said. "I represent — I hope — ordinary Amer- icans." Clinton may say the right things, he suggested, but "one of the things we should do is not only talk the talk but walk the walk." "I am very proud to be the only candidate up here who does not have super PAC, who's not rais- ing huge sums from Wall Street and special inter- ests," he said.
