The A's received starting pitcher Jarrod Parker, out- fielder Collin Cowgill and reliever Ryan Cook in Fri- day's trade — all players the A's envision could be on the major league roster in 2012. Arizona general manag- er Kevin Towers has been committed to winning with pitching since he took the job, and it paid off in his first season. Cahill will complement a talented rota- tion featuring 21-game win- ner Ian Kennedy and 16- game winner Daniel Hud- son. Arizona won 94 games — 29 more than in 2010 — under manager Kirk Gibson on the way to a surprising division title over the 2010 World Series champion San Francisco Giants. The Diamondbacks lost in the first round of the playoffs to Milwaukee in five games. A's GM Billy Beane, meanwhile, is in rebuilding mode with the hopes that the club will be able to build a new ballpark in San Jose and move out of the run- down Oakland Coliseum in a few years. Cahill, who in April was rewarded with a five-year contract worth $30.5 mil- lion, went 12-14 with a 4.16 ERA in a team-high 34 starts. His deal from the A's took him through all three of his arbitration-eligible seasons and first potential year of free agency. It was a tough choice to part ways with the 23-year- old Cahill, a second-round draft pick in 2006 who started 2011 with six straight wins. He made his first All-Star team in 2010. ''It's not easy to trade a guy like Trevor, or Craig, who have been a big part of our major league roster the past two seasons,'' Oakland assistant general manager David Forst said. ''Every so often we have to reshuf- fle the deck. It was a chance to get back a good package. We like what we got back. In addition to Jarrod, who's a top-of-the-rotation guy, we got back two other major league-quality play- ers who could impact our roster in 2012.'' Cahill made $500,000 in 2010. He is set to earn $3.5 million in 2012, $5.5 mil- lion in 2013, $7.7 million in 2014 and $12 million in 2015. There's a $13 million club option for 2016 with a $300,000 buyout. If that option is exercised, Arizona can exercise a $13.5 million MCT file photo The Oakland Athletics traded pitcher Trevor Cahill to the Diamondbacks. option for 2017 with a $500,000 buyout. The 2017 option price would escalate to $14 million if Cahill fin- ishes among the top two in Cy Young Award voting in any year from 2011-16. Arizona selected Parker with the ninth overall pick in the 2007 draft. The right- hander finished with an 11- 8 record and 3.79 ERA in 26 starts for Double-A Mobile last season, striking out 112 batters and walking 55 in 130 2-3 innings. Parker made his major league debut on Sept. 27, pitching 5 2-3 scoreless innings and allowing four hits against the Los Angeles Dodgers for a no-decision in his only start. The Diamondbacks chose Cowgill in the fifth round of the 2008 draft. He has a .239 average with one a home run and nine RBIs in 36 games in the majors last season. Kings ready to open camp (AP) — Even though the Sacra- mento Kings are starting training camp a day later than most NBA teams, the franchise made sure it will have almost a full roster ready after a fast and furious start to free agency Friday. The Kings re-signed shooting guard Marcus Thornton, finalized a deal for free agent center Chuck Hayes and completed rookie con- tracts for Jimmer Fredette, Tyler Honeycutt and Isaiah Thomas. The team also renounced the rights to center Samuel Dalembert, guard Pooh Jeter, swingman Marquis Daniels and forward Darnell Jack- son. By far the most pertinent — and expensive — move involved bol- stering the backcourt. Thornton's deal is worth at least $31 million over four years, a per- son familiar with the decision said. The person spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because the Kings don't disclose contract terms. ''Marcus impressed us greatly last year and we just couldn't wait to re-sign him,'' Kings coach Paul Westphal said. ''We made that a high priority and never felt it was in doubt. We're really pleased to have one of the fine, young shooting guards in the league to be on our team for several years to come. It's a great fit for him and us and was a high priority on our behalf.'' How Thornton's role will change this season is unclear. Thornton averaged 21.3 points in 23 games for the Kings after being acquired in a midseason trade with New Orleans. Tyreke Evans, the 2009-10 Rookie of the Year, is expected to move to shoot- ing guard this season to make room for Fredette. Fredette, the former BYU point guard who became one of college basketball's most talked-about players last season, was acquired in a draft-day trade after being select- ed 10th overall by Milwaukee. The Kings are confident Evans can become a more prolific scorer at shooting guard, and Fredette's skills are more suited to play the point. He also appeared in 12 games in the majors, going 0-1 with a 7.04 ERA in 7 2-3 innings. Forst said both players the A's traded understood the business side of the swap. ''Trevor never gets too high or too low with any- thing,'' Forst said. Oakland trying to keep teams OAKLAND (AP) — Oakland leaders are making a last-ditch effort to keep the Athletics from leaving the East Bay — apparently fear- ing the NBA's Golden State Warriors and NFL's Oak- land Raiders could follow without suitable venues. Oakland Mayor Jean Quan said Friday a letter is being sent to baseball Com- missioner Bud Selig to let him know the city wants to keep the A's. Selig appointed a committee in March 2009 to evaluate the issue facing the Bay Area's two baseball teams, yet he has provided no timetable for when he might announce a decision. A's owner Lew Wolff, deter- mined to move his club south to San Jose so it can survive, and general manag- er Billy Beane have said they expect to hear some- thing from Major League Baseball by next month. ''We wanted to tell you MCT file photo The Sacramento Kings signed first round pick Jimmer Fredette. of basketball operations Geoff Petrie said of Thornton. ''We're very upbeat about the future poten- tial for improvement and the oppor- tunity to watch him play for the Kings again.'' The Kings also made a move to fill out some frontcourt depth. They signed former Houston Rockets forward-center Chuck Hayes. The deal is worth $21.3 mil- lion over four years, said a second person familiar with that deal. Hayes averaged 3.4 points, 4.7 rebounds and 17 minutes per game in six seasons with the Rockets. He attended high school in nearby Modesto, Calif., and grew up in Northern California. •1 p.m., CSNB — Clemson at Arizona •2 p.m., ESPN2 — Villanova at Temple • 2:15 p.m., ESPN — Kentucky at Indi- ana •4 p.m., ESPN2 — Miami at West Vir- ginia •6 p.m., ESPN2 — Michigan St. at Gon- zaga NHL • 10 a.m., NHL NETWORK—Montreal at New Jersey •4 p.m., NHL NETWORK—Tampa Bay at Philadelphia SOCCER • 6:55 a.m., ESPN2 — Premier League, Wolverhampton at Manchester United •7 a.m., FOX SOCCER — Premier League, Everton at Arsenal • 11:30 a.m., FOX SOCCER—Serie A, Fiorentina at Inter Milan • 11 p.m., FOX SOCCER—FIFA Club World Cup, quarterfinal, Esperance Sportive (Tunisia) vs. Al-Saad SC (Qatar) The moves all came on the first day players were officially allowed to sign contracts and most teams opened training camp. Instead, the Kings will begin practices Saturday for the first time since the NBA lockout lifted. ''I'm very excited to be back with Sacramento,'' Thornton said. She insists her city still has a legitimate site near the rundown Oakland Colise- um, which is shared by the A's and Raiders, to build a new ballpark and basketball arena, as well as a waterfront spot in the trendy Jack Lon- don Square neighborhood that could work only for a ballpark.
