One such memory is of my wonderful mother-in-law who sat patiently with me two weeks before Christmas and comforted me as I waited to give birth. My Christmas décor was yet to be put together, there was laundry to do. She suggested that we sit on the couch for a while and just talk. She had noticed that I was huffing and puffing as I brought several laundry baskets of clothes into the house and began folding the family items. She began to tell me about the traditions of her mother and father who were of Norwegian ancestry. She began to describe her home in Canada and how they always pro- vided a room for their minister when he came to preach in the local Lutheran church. Not only did they rearrange their own sleeping arrangements when he came, if it was the Christmas Season they dressed in their best clothing only changing when they had to go to the barn to take care of the animals. Some of the older boys had to sleep in the barn to make room for the preacher. Mother Barber told me of the lefse her mother made during the holiday and of the "julekake", the sweet Christmas bread filled with raisins, candied peel and car- damom. Biscuits and cookies of several kinds were prepared with some of the girls in the family assisting with the baking. She talked of the Norwegian communi- ty members and how they greeted each other with "God Yul!" She also talked of the experience of going to school in Canada where the teacher was not tolerant of chil- dren speaking Norwegian and actu- ally forbid their use of the Norwegian language at school. The teacher also took the privilege of chang- ing each of the children's Norwegian girls' names. Mother Barber and her sis- ters being some those who were changed; she was Gunhild changed to Gunil. Her sisters were Raghild who became Rosie, Ingahild who became Inga and Minnie who was remained Minnie. Norwegian boys faired better with names like Otto, Ole, Nils most retained their originals. At any rate, Mother B. kept my mind off of the labor pains with her tales of Norwegian habits. By the next Christmas I had tole painted a jolly God Jul character to put on my front door. Thanks to my painting teacher, Jeanie Serveau I could con- tribute to Norway's festivities. I am one of those fortunate Carolyn Barber est, I really need them both now. I decided to make orange marmalade the old fash- ioned way; it is taking a very long time to thick- en, much longer than I anticipated. I am sure that those two ladies could solve my canning problem were they here. On the other hand I can visualize their astonished faces as they gazed at my totally disheveled office piled down with projects and more projects. They would look at each other; women who not only had a great mother I am forever grateful for the privilege of having Gunil Paulson Barber as my mother-in-law. She and my own mother, Marjorie Fields Hacker were the greatest of friends and in their later years they spent time together in our home. They added a wonderful piece to our heritage as we watched and lis- tened to them sitting in adjoining rocking chairs with Dejon, their great daughter, only two and one half years old who rocked her rock- ing chair and listened intently to the grandmother's wonderful stories. My mouth is watering for Moth- er B's prune cake and my Mother's chocolate fudge both present at Christmas events. To be totally hon- cover their mouths and chuckle as they judge me totally crazy to have started to make marmalade this late in the day all the while typing this copy at the same time. They were not multi-taskers but great at con- centrating on one task at a time. Okay, I have to get away to our mountain cabin, "Enderud" (the end of the road in Norwegian). The cabin is named after the ancestors of Dagali, Norway who settled their in 1590. Mother Barber, yes I am slipping as I have found a Norwe- gian Radio Station emanating from Norway through my computer. I am laughing hysterically as the music in USA country with a little Nor- way like accompaniment. Wow! So much for Hallingdal Radio, I will never learn to speak the language this way. God Yul to all and to all a good- night! Carolyn Barber has been writing her column in the Daily News since 1992. It appears on Saturdays. She can be contacted by e-mail at hur- car@yahoo.com.
