My answer would be a faithful, evangelist. Willy Mays? Surely he is one of the world's greatest baseball players with a huge heart to match. What about Mother Teresa? Is she not the embodiment of the truth that one supremely compassionate person can be a world changer? Like Jesus, the One in whose image she lived. When people hear your name what will they associate it with? Will it remind them of good things - honesty, commitment, and respect, being a man or woman of your word, timeliness, generosity, faithfulness and goodness? Or does your name bring with it a lack of integrity such as: not keep- ing your word, being late, having a bad attitude and other thoughts that go along with a bad name? I came across this scripture while reading the other day: "A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold." Prov. 22:1 It really made me stop and think. According to God, a good name is better than any tangible riches you can have. Ecclesiastes 7:1 says, "A good name is better than fine perfume…" Clearly, hav- ing a good and respectable name is important to God! Unfortunately, many non- Christians don't trust Christians because some of us have allowed our actions to "muddy" up their name. Some have not been true to their word, paid their bills on time, acted with kindness, self- lessness or – most impor- tantly – holiness. I remember sitting in a Bible College class years ago and being taught the principle of a good name. They told the students to make sure we tip well when we ate out, to be on time for work, to obey the traffic laws, treat the clerks in town with kind- ness, and to even return the shopping carts to their designated places. Our school did- n't want a "bad name" with the businesses in town. They had worked long and hard to make sure they had a good name in the town and didn't want the students to jeopardize that. Many times it is just the practi- cal things we need to be reminded of – being on time, treating a store clerk with a kind word and a smile (even if we have been waiting in a long line) and doing what we say we will do even if it costs us. There is a statement that says, "It's not what you say, but what you do that people remember." We must remember that the world is watch- ing us and a bad name is not a good testimony to the world. Chaunda Jensen GodTalk Ultimately, what matters isn't what others say about you, but what God says. So focus on keeping your name good and respected. Choosing the right thing or the high road is always the best way. A good name is so impor- tant to God and our goal should always be to please Him. Speak Life: Lord, help me to do things throughout my day to keep my name respected and good. For a good name is better than all the riches in the world. Chaunda Jensen and her husband Larry, have lived in Red Bluff for over 19 years and are founders of Jensen Ministries. They are Missionary Evangelists, traveling to churches all over Northern California and Nevada. E-mail Larry and Chaunda at lrjensen@sbcglobal.net. Voices of Faith: How important is a candidate's religion? McClatchy Newspapers CANDIDATES NEED ASTRONG BACKGROUND Pastor Emeritus Raymond Davis Jr., Greater Corinthian Church of the Christ : Every- thing becomes an issue in the politics of life â€" the educa- tional, the religious and cultural sociology in general. But it's important that those who run for office have more than just religion, also religious convic- tions, about matters that touch the core of our existence. Political office is public ser- vanthood, and those who would embrace office must have a pas- sion for truth because the doing of politics is under the eyes of God. God makes the point of his involvement in the politics of human culture when it is writ- ten," For there is no power but of God; the powers that be are ordained of God." (Romans 13:1b) Because political poli- cies involve people, God never endorsed the separation of church and state. For God, truth must be served in political prin- ciples. Twenty-first century politics weighs in on sensitive original initiatives with biblical original- ity: the birth initiative, "and she conceived and bare Cain " (Genesis 4:1b) ; the marriage initiative, "and Adam knew his wife" (Genesis 4:1a) ; the gen- der initiative, "God created him, male and female" (Genesis 1:27) ; and the creation initia- tive, "in the beginning God cre- ated the heaven and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). These are religion issues. The importance of political can- didates having strong religious background is an essentiality. Religion and politics repre- sent the spiritual and material economy of our lives, but with God as our ultimate source. IT SHOULDN'T BE THE SOLE CONSIDERATION Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Center & Monastery: Hopefully a candidate is never elected or not elected simply because of his or her faith. Selecting a candidate, ideally, should be a more complex decision than simply whether you agree with his or her choice of religions. However, religion does pro- vide us with a moral and ethi- cal framework from which to make decisions. For example, Buddhism places great emphasis on non-harming and bringing compassion and a healing intention to every situ- ation. Therefore, doesn't it make sense to elect political leaders who personify these attributes, regardless of what religion they subscribe to? Unfortunately today, too many of our elected officials are concerned only with being re-elected and staying in office. The decisions that they are making for the populace are too often based upon what is best for their political careers rather than what is best for our world. From a Buddhist perspec- tive, every decision we make should be based upon "ahim- sa." "Ahimsa" is a Sanskrit word that, literally translated, means "non-harming." Imag- ine if we selected our elected officials based upon this prin- ciple . Rarely do we find a politi- cal candidate whose views match our own 100 percent. However, if we use the moral and ethical framework from our faith (whatever faith that may be) as a guide, it can help us select political leaders who hopefully will make decisions that will make our world a bet- ter and safer place to live.
