Some 90 4-H members from in and around Te- hama County participated March 28 in the annual 4-H Livestock Judging Day. The tables were turned as 4-H members were the judges for the day. Awards were given to the mem- bers who placed the classes closest to the official plac- ings. Classes included mar- ket lambs, market steers, rabbits, meat goats, mar- ket swine and dairy cattle. This year's guest pre- senter was 4-H alum Elora Brunelle, who discussed rabbit showmanship tech- niques. Great informa- tion for members to know should they ever show in a Round Robin event at the Tehama District Fair. Top High Point Individ- uals went to Austin Flood of Bowman 4-H and Ry- lynn Root and Phoebe Heino of Manton 4-H. Individual Oral Rea- son awards went to Austin Flood and Allyson Price of Bowman 4-H, Hannah Stringer of Bend Jelly 4-H and Phoebe Heino of Man- ton 4-H. Top Team awards were given as follows: Top Ju- nior Team went to Bow- man 4-H — Austin Flood, Grayson Richmond, and Destiny Heggie; Top In- termediate Team went to Antelope 4-H — Sierra Huntsman, Julia Silvera and Olivia Silvera; Top Se- nior Team went to Bow- man 4-H — Heather Nel- son, Riley Gove and Ash- ley Clarke. A big thanks to Bow- man 4-H Club for hosting this year's event and to all the volunteers who judged or brought animals for the event. Many veterans have re- cently received a white card in the mail from the U. S. Department of Veterans Af- fairs (USDVA). This card is called the Choice Card or VACAA Card. VACAA stands for the Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act of 2014, a law enacted by Con- gress and signed by Presi- dent Obama in August to improve health care for Vet- erans. These cards do not give a veteran permission to go wherever they want, when- ever they want for health care. This is not a fee basis card for emergency treat- ment. You must call the USDVA at 866-606-8198 to get per- mission before using this card. The veteran who mistakenly uses this card without VA pre-approval will most likely be held re- sponsible for the medical charges. Distribution of the Choice Card began on No- vember 4, 2014 and ended in January. All cards should have been received by mid- February. The cards were born out of the desire of the USDVA to make sure veterans did not have to wait for med- ical care in light of the problems experienced last year in dealing with wait- ing times for veterans to see a primary care physi- cian. The Choice Card is de- signed to supplement the care you receive at your VA medical facility, not replace or limit that care. The Choice Card provides a safety net for Veterans who are on a USDVA wait- ing list because a health care appointment could not be provided to them within 30 days of their pre- ferred date or the date that is medically determined by their physician or who live more than 40 miles from the closest VA medical fa- cility. In order to expand el- igibility for the Veterans Choice Program, the De- partment of Veterans Af- fairs (VA) announced on March 24th, 2015 that it will change the calcula- tion used to determine the distance between a Veteran's residence and the nearest VA medical fa- cility from a straight line distance to actual driving distance. If you believe those cir- cumstances apply to you, contact the USDVA at 866- 606-8198 to verify that you are eligible to use the card. Once they determine eli- gibility, they will help you through the process of ob- taining an appointment for care. There are many state and federal benefits and programs available to vet- erans and their depen- dents. To find out if you are eligible for any of these benefits, call the Tehama County Veterans Service Office (VSO) at (530) 529- 3664. The VSO office is by appointment only.
