Team USA at the 2012 London Olympics, practi- cally carried the Pelicans into the playoffs. He fin- ished with 31 points, 13 re- bounds and three blocks in the clinching win over the Spurs on Wednesday night. Pelicans coach Monty Williams expects the 22-year-old Davis to show up the same way he has on every big stage in his career. And Davis doesn't care that just about every- body outside of New Or- leans is picking the Peli- cans to lose. "We love matchups like this," Davis said. "We've been in this situation the whole year. We've made it this far. We're not looking to go home just yet." Here are some things to watch during the series: DAVIS' DIFFERENCE The Warriors went 3-1 against the Pelicans this season, though Davis sat out two of Golden State's wins. He was the NBA's biggest difference-maker this sea- son, leading the league with a 30.89 player effi- ciency rating, a compli- cated formula that calcu- lates a player's per-minute productivity. He averaged 24.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game. GETTING DEFENSIVE Ver- satile forward Draymond Green and Bogut will spend most of the time defending Davis. Bogut (96.8) and Green (97.2) fin- ished second and fourth in defensive rating, re- spectively, and Green is a leading candidate for De- fensive Player of the Year along with San Antonio's Kawhi Leonard. Green gives up size at 6-foot-7, but he's as crafty as it gets and an overall pest in the post. He could play even more minutes with for- ward David Lee, a two- time All-Star reduced to a reserve role this season, ruled out for Game 1 with a strained lower back. SPLASH BROTHERS Curry surpassed his own NBA record for most 3-pointers in a season, finishing with 286 from beyond the arc, where he shot 44.3 per- cent. Thompson ranked second in the league with 239 3-pointers, shooting 43.9 percent from long range. The All-Star back- court is the key to Golden State's potent offense. HOLIDAY BACK The Peli- cans got a late-season lift with the return of point guard Jrue Holiday, who missed 41 games with a stress reaction in his right leg. Holiday has been on a minutes restric- tion since he returned last week, but he could pro- vide a big boost off the bench behind Tyreke Ev- ans and Eric Gordon. Of course, the Warriors went 2-0 against New Orleans when Holiday played in December. HOME COURT Oracle Arena has been one of the league's loudest and toughest venues for a long time. The Warriors took that to a different level this season, going an as- tonishing 39-2 at home. One loss came to Chicago in overtime and the other to the defending champi- ons Spurs in early Novem- ber. Can the Pelicans steal one on the Warriors' home floor? Warriors FROM PAGE 1 ring No. 6 for San Anto- nio, LeBron James is re- suming his quest to bring a title to Cleveland, likely MVP Stephen Curry led Golden State to the league's best record and James Harden might have Hous- ton primed for its first Fi- nals run in 20 years. And new faces are ready to make a splash. Kyrie Ir- ving and Kevin Love make their playoff debuts when Cleveland opens against Boston. Anthony Davis gets his first taste of the post- season when New Orleans takes on the Warriors. Games will sell out and ratings will surely be high, but something might just seem off. "These (are) guys who've been in the playoffs year in and year out, who bring a lot of excitement to the game and to the postsea- son," Anthony said. "So when I look back and see all the guys that's out, it's like the game is miss- ing something. But at the end of the day, guys got to get healthy, guys got to get right. You can't push it." Bryant, Durant, An- thony and Chris Bosh were among those who saw their seasons end early be- cause of injury or illness. Of those, only Bosh played in more than half of his team's games. They've all been out for a while, and Bryant was spotted in Mi- lan on Thursday while 16 teams at home started tun- ing up for what they hope are title runs. Paul George made a gal- lant effort to help Indiana after he recovered from the horrific leg injury he en- dured last summer, but the Pacers were ousted on the season's final night. Wade and Miami had a chance until the next-to-last night. "It's been my toughest year by far," George wrote on Twitter, "but looking forward to my greatest summer ahead!" In all, nearly half of the league's 32 highest-paid players won't be in the playoffs. Wade has had the short- est offseasons in each of the last four years, with Miami going to the Finals in each. He played in 86 games in those four years, which means he basically logged an extra full season — and then some — during those postseasons. "I haven't had that much time off in a long time," Wade said. "Playing into late June the last four years, it's been a lot, mentally, es- pecially physically. Then coming right back into this season and all the things we went through, from the summer to the season with all the injuries and every- thing, it was a lot." Would he have rather been in the playoffs? Ab- solutely. But with that not an op- tion, Wade can see a silver lining. "It'll be good for me to get away for a while," Wade said, "and come back better next year." Playoffs FROM PAGE 1 AUTORACING NASCAR Drive to Stop Diabetes 300Xfinity Series Qualifying:6:30a.m.,FS1. On the air fered in last Saturday's 1-0 home win over the Vancou- ver Whitecaps. He replaced J.J. Koval in the 56th min- ute as the Quakes tried to make a game of it. "We just felt if he went from the beginning, we didn't know if he was go- ing to finish it or maybe hurt himself if he gets a little time to warm up and see how the game goes," Kinnear said. "I'd rather not have used him at all tonight. He was pressed into action a little earlier than we wanted to. He came on and did pretty good." Wondolowski volleyed a Matias Perez Garcia corner kick over the net in the 59th minute and drilled a 22-yard shot into the stands in the 73rd minute. "I had chances," he said. "I didn't do well enough on them, especially the first one that I hit over. If I finish that, then it's a whole different game." The Quakes will have two weeks to mull over this game with a bye weekend next week be- fore hitting the road for three consecutive games over eight days in May. Quakes FROM PAGE 1 when Davis homered on the first pitch he saw in the fourth, and Vogt tied it at 3 with his first homer just two pitches later. Kansas City went in front again in the sixth on Infan- te's single, but Royals man- ager Ned Yost elected to leave Guthrie in rather than go to Herrera at that point. Vogt made him pay with a drive to right for his first ca- reer multihomer game. Later in the inning, Law- rie was on first base when Josh Reddick lined a pitch off Herrera toward third, where Mike Moustakas fielded it. He flipped to Al- cides Escobar covering sec- ond, but Lawrie's late slide over the bag caused a col- lision that left Escobar crumpled on the dirt. He was helped off the field without putting any weight on his left leg, while Lawrie had to be escorted by his teammates through a horde of angry Royals and back to the Oakland dugout. The Royals said Esco- bar is day to day with a sprained knee. • A's RHP Jarrod Parker (Tommy John surgery) is scheduled to throw three innings in extended spring training Saturday. On Monday, LHP Sean No- lin (sports hernia surgery) will throw two innings, and RHP A.J. Griffin will throw one inning.
