6A Daily News – Friday, October 28, 2011 To err is human — to forgive, devine After my last fight in Colorado, I spent a few days licking my wounds (mostly my wounded ego). Then I jumped right back into my training. I was preparing for the next fight in North Carolina and another in the Bay Area after that. In the midst of my training, I read on Facebook that one of my for- mer opponents- whom I have held a serious grudge against for a few years now- had a fight coming up. I thought to myself, I hope she gets knocked out. I eagerly awaited the results of the fight when I read that it was postponed because she hurt her back while warming up for her fight and ended up in the hospi- tal. I thought to myself, good, the wench deserves it. Avery Vilche Fitness Buff Happily, I continued my own train- ing. I was work- ing out hard, getting in a lot of sparring and grappling. In one of my grap- pling sessions, I was rolling with Alex Fazleev and ended up snapping my pinkie. I went to my doctor, got some x-rays and found out I'd broken it and messed up the tendon. I had to back out of all of my fights for the rest of this year. I was pretty dev- astated, and Alex felt bad too (even though it was not his fault). I went to church that Sunday after the injury. The sermon was about for- giveness. It hit home hard. I knew some of my own evil thinking brought about part of my misfortune. It was a total karma thing. I knew better than to wish harm on someone else or revel in their pain. So I am working on letting go. It's harder for me than training in high altitude, but I can do it. The only good thing to come from my injury was that I would be able to get off the diet for a bit and enjoy comfort foods. I had the best funnel cake at the fair- covered with choco- late and bravarian cream. I finished the whole thing. It was heavenly. It would have been even better if people didn't give me so much static about eating junk. Just so you know, even fighters eat junk food on occasion. I don't know anyone who eats perfectly 100% of the time. I have truly enjoyed going out to eat and letting Courtesy photo Tim Hurst my body have some down time from all the training, but I can't wait to get clearance from my doctor to fight again. And without being able to hit people and things, I get a little cranky. Despite my misfortune, one of our own Team Psy- cho guys, Tim Hurst, competed at the Quest For The Best grappling tour- nament at the 2011 Olympia Expo in Las Vegas. It was his first grappling tournament, but he'd been training with us since May. He is one of those rare individuals who trains hard every day without fail and puts his all into every training ses- sion. He is an animal. His endurance is great, his strength is amazing and he's got some tremendous skills. I had every confi- dence in his ability to do well at this tournament. But when he cam home with the belt for his weight class, 160 pounds, I was floored! He cleaned up, beat 4 guys and only lost one match. You can see how amazing the belt is. He was pretty humble when I asked him about his experience, but he did have this to say, "It was nice to be able to bring something home to show people that I was actually doing something." I'll say. No one's going to question that belt, Tim. Great job and congratulations. COMPLETE AUTO REPAIR All makes and models.
