October 5, 2011 The yo-yo became popular in the United States after it was marketed by Donald F. Duncan Sr., a businessman from Chicago, but he didn't invent the toy. In 1928, Duncan was on a busi- ness trip to San Francisco when he saw Philippine immigrant Pedro Flores, who had gotten financing to manufac- ture the yo-yos and had trademarked the name, demonstrating how to use the toy. Duncan realized that the toy had the potential to be a huge success, so he paid Flores $5,000 for all the rights. Incidentally, the name "yo-yo" means "come-come" in the native lan- guage of the Philippines.
