Ontheair ED ZURGA — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Oakland Raiders kicker Sebastian Janikowski (11) boots a 53-yard field goal during the first half Sunday against the Kansas City Chiefs in Kansas City, Mo. The Associated Press ALAMEDA For years Se- bastian Janikowski has been the saving grace whenever the Oakland Raiders' offense stalled. The veteran kicker repeat- edly bailed the team out with his powerful leg, set- ting numerous franchise records along the way. He's about to establish another team record — though it's clearly one he'd rather do without. With two games left be- fore the Raiders (2-12) put the wraps on another dis- appointing season, Jan- ikowski is on pace to have the fewest field goal at- tempts over a 16-game sea- son in franchise history. It's not that the coaching staff has lost faith in the former first-round draft pick. In one of those rare sta- tistical oddities, Oakland is last in the league in total offense and 31st in points yet owns the NFL's top red zone offense. The Raiders are scoring touchdowns from inside the opponents' 20-yard line at a 75 percent clip, essentially eliminat- ing the need for the field goal unit. "It's frustrating more than anything because you want to be out there trying to help the team win some games," Janikowski said. "I never think about how many field goals I kick, I just want to win. I knew it was low." Janikowski has never at- tempted fewer than 25 field goals in any season since entering the NFL as the 17th overall pick in 2000. At his current rate, he'll finish with 19 this year. That's one fewer than the current team record of 20, shared by Errol Mann (1978) and Jeff Jae- ger (1990). The upside is that de- spite the few opportuni- ties he's had, the 36-year- old Janikowski has quietly rebounded nicely from one of the worst seasons of his career. He's converted 15 of 17 attempts and is one of 10 kickers in the league with a success rate of 88 percent or better this year. Raiders don't need much from kicker Janikowskihasfewfieldgoaltriesduetored-zonesuccess NFL be for starters, with the understanding that we look at our rotation with Lincecum in the rotation, so that does create some significant barrier to add- ing another starter. But I don't think we're closing the door. If an opportunity presents itself, we want to be proactive." The Giants moved quickly with Peavy last summer when Cain went in for elbow surgery, acquir- ing the 33-year-old from the Boston Red Sox. He was 8-4 with a 2.17 ERA in 12 starts following a trade and played an integral role as the Giants reached the postseason. Peavy strug- gled in October and re- corded just four outs in Game 6 of the World Se- ries, but he remained high on the wish list as the off- season began. Peavy had hoped to join close friend Jon Lester this offseason, but the Giants kept in touch even as they fell out of the Lester sweep- stakes last week. They view Peavy as a reliable starter and an outstanding club- house presence, and his energy is credited for help- ing turn a sluggish team around late in the season. Peavy also is a favorite of manager Bruce Bochy, who was the manager in San Di- ego when Peavy broke into the big leagues. Peavy's deal is slightly backloaded, according to FoxSports.com, paying him a $4 million signing bonus, $7 million in 2015 and $13 million in 2016. The Gi- ants have tried to backload deals this winter, knowing that Hudson and Lincecum are coming off the books after the 2015 season. The deal also includes a full no- trade clause. Earlier this week, the Gi- ants agreed to a two-year deal with Romo, who be- came more valuable Fri- day after a flurry of activity in the division. Romo, one of the best right-handed relievers in the game, fig- ures to be the top weapon against new San Diego Pa- dres Matt Kemp, Wil Myers and Justin Upton, all right- handed hitters. The busy Padres agreed to a deal for Upton on Friday. The Giants talked to the Braves about Upton earlier this offseason but balked at Atlanta's insistence that ex- pensive and unproductive third baseman Chris John- son be part of the deal. In- stead, they appear to have found a short-term solution in McGehee, a 32-year-old Santa Cruz native. McGehee has had an up-and-down career, play- ing for five MLB teams and spending the 2013 season in Japan. He hit .287 with a .355 on-base percent- age last season but had only four home runs and slugged .357 while hitting into a league-high 31 dou- ble plays. McGehee will be a defensive downgrade from Sandoval, but he is a cost-effective option for a team that put all its eggs in the Sandoval basket and had lukewarm interest in the other third base op- tions on the market. Giants FROM PAGE 1 with five points and Owen Swarthout had four. The Patriots had four players reach double-dig- its. Jonathan Treat had 16 points before fouling out. Joro Dimitrou and Jor- dan Chao each finished with 14 points. Scott Conklin had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Josh Lewis had a first quarter bucket. Liberty Christian plays at 10:30 a.m. against Golden Valley in the sev- enth-place game.
