COURTESYPHOTO VETERANS GROUPTRAINSDOGSFOR RETURNING MILITARY Thispastweek I ran into a local business owner who asked me to address some- thing that has her frustrated. Ordinarily, I don't take up the cause on behalf of someone else because I don't always resonate with what they feel so strongly about. This time is different. When I saw her, I com- plemented her on the service I received at her business and what a great time I had. She thanked me and said she appreci- ated my column and that she hoped I could speak out about an issue that she has had. Apparently, someone wrote a fero- cious review of her busi- ness and it felt very per- sonal and unwarranted. Now, this may set me up from some contro- versy here, but I really understood how she felt. For years, anyone who had a difference of opin- ion with my column, or anyone else's, could write a scathing comment and do it anonymously. Thankfully, social me- dia sharing options that require comments to be authenticated has re- placed that privilege and we know who is post- ing. This means we can all decide for ourselves if the commentary is com- ing from a person we know, like and trust or a troll. This level of change hasn't spread to all the other forms of review, many of which can still be left anonymously. In the spirit of free speech, honesty and a good old fashioned heads up, I think that it is im- portant to be able to review restau- rants, businesses and the like, to help people in making their decisions to buy. Where I part company with the system is when the people posting use such harsh and unneces- sarily critical comments. In this day, when someone can simply go on line and write horri- ble things about others, it is more important than ever to check your emo- tions, judgments and ul- terior motives at the door. If you are a frequent flyer of Yelp or other review sites, consider what you say and how you say it. First off, karma has an interesting way of show- ing up to repay you for your efforts and second, there are always reasons why things aren't perfect. Before you post, think. Before you criticize, ask. Before you assume you're right, check your motives. Before you attack, find common ground. If you find yourself fre- quently at odds with peo- ple, businesses and it is a rush for you to tell it like it is, I encourage you to remind yourself that hurting people hurts peo- ple, whether it's in person or on the Internet.
