The man charged with killing the 14-year-old girl in February 2013, Quentin Ray Bealer, ap- peared in court Monday morning for the first time since his defense team was granted a change of venue motion to move the case out of Tehama County. Tehama County Superior Court Judge John Ga- raventa said his staff had reached out to the Ad- ministrative Director of the Courts, which had contacted Yolo and Colusa counties. Sacramento County has also indicated it would accept the transfer, Garaventa said. Bealer's attorney, Shon Northam, said the de- fense had no objections to a transfer to Sacra- mento. Garaventa granted the change of venue mo- tion last week in a written ruling. "The Defendant has carried his burden of prov- ing there is a reasonable likelihood that a fair and impartial trial of this case may not be had in Te- hama County," Garaventa wrote in his conclusion. Garaventa wrote the most compelling factors leading to his decision were the extensive public- ity of the case, the county's size and characteris- tics and the status of the defendant. Bealer is charged with killing Nichols in Febru- ary 2013. She was last seen near Red Bluff Union High School and her body was discovered two days later in a wooded area just south of the cam- pus.
