Ontheair By Cam Inman BayAreaNewsGroup SANTA CLARA San Fran- cisco native Stevie Johnson beamed with hometown pride Thursday inside the 49ers locker room, savor- ing the Giants' World Se- ries triumph and gaining more inspiration. "Sure puts some pres- sure on us," Johnson said. "Let's see if we can make this a San Francisco thing this year, baseball and football, and hopefully the Warriors can do it, too, in the NBA." Tasting playoff joy has been atop Johnson's agenda since he arrived in a May 9 trade from the Buf- falo Bills, where he toiled his first six seasons without a postseason berth. "I don't want to be the receiver to never have seen the playoffs," John- son added. "So I'm going to be going extra hard this year to see the playoffs, plus more." Johnson definitely is fac- toring into the 49ers play- off chase. He has three touchdown catches in their past four games heading into Sunday's division tilt with the St. Louis Rams at Levi's Stadium. That's not surprising from a receiver who had three consecutive 1,000- yard seasons from 20010- 12. Nor is it bad for a vet- eran relegated to an "X- factor" role — as he put it — behind starters Anquan Boldin and Michael Crab- tree. Johnson insisted there is "no frustration at all" about his part-time gig, adding: "It ain't like there's a bunch of pansies in front of me." Johnson has caught 25 of 32 passes targeted his way for 315 yards (12.6- yard average). Boldin (39- of-55, 447 yards, 1 TD) and Crabtree (32-of-51, 322 yards, 3 TDs) are the lead- ing receivers, followed by Johnson, tight end Vernon Davis (14-of-23, 142 yards, 2 TDs) and Brandon Lloyd (10-of-22, 252 yards, 1 TD). "Stevie is doing a really good job," offensive coor- dinator Greg Roman said. "It's hard to keep him off the field, and as long as he continues to produce like that, which I'm sure he will, he'll continue to see more opportunities." At whose expense? Ro- man wouldn't say, but he did give Crabtree a vote of confidence, saying the vet- eran's best is yet to come. Crabtree, Boldin and Lloyd each caught a touchdown pass in the 49ers' last game against the Rams, a 31-17 win on Oct. 13. Crabtree's came on one of his finest routes as a 49er. Asked to name his favorite route of his six- year career, Crabtree re- sponded: "I don't know. I just want to score more touchdowns and run more routes." Johnson's desire coin- cides with the 49ers' pas- sion to win their first Su- per Bowl in 20 years. As for Johnson's own trophy case, he said, "It needs some pro- fessional attention." The only postseason wins on his resume: back-to-back Music City Bowl triumphs with Kentucky in 2006 and 2007. NFL 49erschasingplayoffsagain San Francisco native Johnson looks for 1st postseason berth and relievers Jeremy Af- feldt, Javier Lopez, Santi- ago Casilla, Sergio Romo and Tim Lincecum. Matt Cain, too, but he was hurt this year. General manager Brian Sabean, longest-tenured in baseball, can't put a fin- ger on why the mix keeps working. He is proud of the core of players who were drafted and came through the system and played such a huge part this time. "It's a testament to player development and scouting. That's what we all hope for, that you can plug your holes from within and build your team from within," Sabean said. "That's a surefire way to kind of keep things mov- ing forward. It prevents you from having to go into the market, whether it's free agency or more so the trade market." The Giants survived skids in June and Septem- ber before winning the wild-card game at Pitts- burgh. They then beat Washington in the Division Series and St. Louis in the NL Championship series. It has started with Bo- chy and his spot-on deci- sion making, from rest- ing the relievers regularly early in the season so he'd have every one of them for the October run, to going with Bumgarner at every chance. "But you have to play good baseball for six months, whatever, to get there," Bochy said. "Once you get there, you've heard guys say, 'Well, it's a crap shoot,' but you have to play your best ball. You have to have the pitching. That's obvious. But you've got to execute." For the Giants, it's about every player doing his part and serving a role, because, as Sabean puts it, "We don't have a star system here." "It's everybody's got to pull on the same chain and everybody's got to be ready to play," he said. "They un- derstand the culture." Dynasty or not, Affeldt has solved a potential prob- lem at home. The lefty reliever and Game 7 winner has three young sons — and, now, three championships. "My three boys now all get to have rings on their finger," he said, "And I'm very happy about that." The Giants won 3-2to win the series. played first period. Ja- son Demers appeared to give the Sharks the lead about six minutes into the game only to have the goal waived off because of inci- dental contact with Wild goalie Darcy Kuemper. San Jose did take a 1-0 lead at 16:06 on a nice play that saw Matt Nieto throw a cross-ice pass to a pinch- ing Mueller. He threw the puck to the front of the net where it went into the Min- nesota net off Wild forward Zach Parise. With Wild call-up Ste- phane Veilleux in the pen- alty box for charging in the second period, Wingels doubled the San Jose lead when he scooped up a loose puck and beat Kuemper on the short side at 4:20 for a power-play goal. Minnesota took control the rest of the second pe- riod. The Wild cut the lead in half at 8:40 when Jason Zucker had the puck in the corner and found Koivu speeding into the slot. A perfect pass from Joe Pavelski to Thornton gave the Sharks a 3-1 lead just 1:37 into the third period, but the lead was down to one goal again less than four minutes later when Brodziak redirected a shot- pass from Thomas Vanek into the San Jose net. The same two Wild forwards combined on the tying goal as well at 10:32. Sharks FROM PAGE 1 ANN HEISENFELT — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Wild goalie Darcy Kuemper cannot get to a shot by Sharks defenseman Jason Demers but it is ruled no goal due to accidental interference during the first period in St. Paul, Minn., on Thursday.
