They also were set back early by new coach Dave Joerger's ill-fated efforts to speed up the offense. Now that everyone is healthy and on the same page, the Griz- zlies are ready to grind again. 7. PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS: They took the Spurs approach this summer, making smaller tweaks around their es- tablished core of LaMarcus Aldridge, Damian Lillard, Wes Matthews and Nic Ba- tum and hoping continuity breeds success. 8. HOUSTON ROCKETS: Hey, somebody has to fin- ish eighth. Losing Parsons could put more pressure on Dwight Howard and James Harden to carry the load. InTheMix 9. NEW ORLEANS PEL- ICANS: Davis was a mon- ster for Team USA. If the Pelicans can stay healthy, they could sneak in. 10. PHOENIX SUNS: They won't sneak up on anyone this year. If they are to improve, Eric Bled- soe will have to earn that $70 million extension. 11. DENVER NUGGETS: Welcome back, Arron Af- flalo and Danilo Gallinari. Keep growing, Kenneth Faried. Facing Long Odds 12. MINNESOTA TIM- BERWOLVES: Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine and Anthony Bennett have loads of potential. But it will take time to recover from trading Love. 13. SACR AMENTO KINGS: DeMarcus Cous- ins should make his first All-Star team. That will likely be their highlight of the season. 14. LOS ANGELES LAK- ERS: Steve Nash is already out. Not even a 28-year-old Kobe Bryant could carry this crew to the playoffs. 15. UTAH JAZZ: Derrick Favors and Enes Kanter need to start asserting themselves if the Jazz are going to make a jump. What To Know NEW COACHES: The West has four new coaches. Flip Saunders (Minnesota) returns for a second tour, Quin Snyder (Utah) is a respected hoops tactician, Byron Scott (Lakers) has ties to the Showtime glory days and Kerr (Golden State) has never coached but already has pressure to win right away. FA'S TO WATCH: Marc Gasol will be coveted if Memphis lets him get to free agency next summer. The Clippers' DeAndre Jor- dan, Sacramento's Rudy Gay and Portland's Wesley Matthews could all cash in as well. WESTBROOK'S TIME: The shoot-first point guard will have to shoot even more while the MVP re- covers. KOBE'S BACK: He's 36 and coming off two major injuries. The Lakers may be bad, but watching Bry- ant fight off Father Time will be compelling. HISTORY M A DE: WNBA All-Star Becky Hammon joins the Spurs as the NBA's first full-time female assistant. Western FROM PAGE 1 sinking liner in the second. On a night that began with a remembrance of late Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, Kansas City pro- duced just enough run support even without des- ignated hitter Billy Butler. The Series shifted to AT&T Park and National League rules for three games. The Giants had their six-game home winning streak in the World Series snapped. The unbeaten run dated to the 2002 wild- card club of Barry Bonds and Co. that lost in seven games to the Angels. The Royals seemed un- fazed by the fanfare and tough conditions in im- proving to 5-0 on the road this postseason. Of the first 56 times the World Series was tied 1-all, the Game 3 winner went on to win in 37 of those instances and four of the last five. A cast of Giants Hall of Famers were celebrated on the field in a star-studded pregame featuring a "Play Ball!" chant by Huey Lewis. Pinch-hitter Michael Morse hit an RBI double with none out in the sixth to chase Guthrie. Royals manager Ned Yost turned it over to his fantastic bullpen, and Kelvin Her- rera immediately walked Gregor Blanco. With the hard-throw- ing Herrera clocking 99- 101 mph on the radar gun, Joe Panik had a tough time attempting a sacri- fice bunt. His high-bounc- ing grounder still did the trick to advance both run- ners, and Buster Posey pulled the Giants to 3-2 on a groundout. Then, the Royals shut down San Francisco the rest of the way. Herrera worked 1 1/3 innings, rookie Brandon Finnegan got two outs in his World Series debut, and Wade Davis pitched a 1-2-3 eighth. Greg Holland got three outs for a save. The four hitless innings of relief were the most in the World Series in 22 years. Guthrie retired 10 straight during one stretch and combined with Hud- son to retire 20 in a row. That was the longest Se- ries streak since the Yan- kees' Don Larsen and the Brooklyn Dodgers' Sal Maglie retired the first 23 batters during Larsen's perfect game in 1956, ac- cording to STATS. As a gorgeous Bay Area afternoon turned into a breezy night along the wa- ter, the 39-year-old Hudson left in the sixth to a rous- ing ovation from the or- ange towel-twirling sell- out crowd. Hudson waited 16 years for his first World Series chance only to watch Al- cides Escobar hit the game's first pitch for a double. Es- cobar scored on Cain's groundout, and Hudson settled in nicely after the second. The right-hander retired 12 in a row before Escobar's one-out single through Hudson's legs in the sixth. Gordon followed with an RBI double. Guthrie's mark In a quirky stat, Guthrie became the fifth starting pitcher in World Series his- tory to not record a walk or a strikeout through five innings and the first since Hall of Famer Greg Mad- dux in Game 2 of the 1996 Series for Atlanta against the Yankees. Up next Giants: Vogelsong is the only pitcher to yield no more than one run in his first five postseason starts. That run ended in the NL Championship Series when Vogelsong allowed four runs in three innings of a no-decision. Series FROM PAGE 1 CHARLIE RIEDEL — THE ASSOCIATED PRESS The Kansas City Royals' Greg Holland throws to first for the final out on the San Francisco Giants' Hunter Pence during the ninth inning of Game 3of baseball's World Series Friday in San Francisco. The Royals won the game 3-2to lead the series 2-1.
