OCTOBER 22-28, 2014 UCW 17 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM College Transfer Day is planned at Fayetteville Technical Community College on Tuesday, Nov. 25, in the gymnasium of the Horace Sisk Building. The purpose of the event is to promote transfer- ability of community college students to public and private four-year colleges and universities. It's also an opportunity for students to connect and have questions answered by university representatives about admissions requirements, programs of study, and financial aid processes. Being able to connect with a multitude of educational representatives at once is an extremely important opportunity and resource for students. Students should remember that transferring to another college is not exactly the same as applying to college the first time. Although high school tran- scripts and SAT/ACT scores may be reviewed, typi- cally these are going to take a back seat to the aca- demic college transcript. In other words, academic college transcripts will be reviewed more rigor- ously than high school transcripts. Students must also be more cognizant about earning strong grades if they desire to compete against other students for extremely competitive transfer programs. Transfer students should also be mindful of adhering to university deadlines, which are very different from the open-door policy of most com- munity colleges. Universities not only have dead- lines which may vary from one school to another but also have specific policies for transfer students. It is imperative that students check each university's website to attain the most up-to-date information regarding transfer guidelines and appropriate transfer dates. It is also advisable for students to use college transfer day to make contacts, pick up college and university literature and have specific questions answered by university representatives as they relate to academic requirements for transferability. How important is it for students to visit the campus of universities before deciding if it has the right fit? Visiting the campus of the universi- ties that you have a vested interest within can be a crucial component to meeting your needs academically and emotionally. A student should make it a priority to meet with department heads, tour the campus and speak with current students to have a better understanding of the campus cli- mate. Making sure you speak with university rep- resentatives about visiting the campus is just one component to having a successful college transfer transition. College transfer day is sponsored by the Career Center at FTCC and will occur from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. All students are encouraged to attend.
