The first good news was legal. Last year a federal court in Wiscon- sin found the statute cre- ating an annual day of prayer unconstitutional. This year the appeals court overturned the lower court decision in a unanimous vote. The judges saw no entangle- ment of church and state since no one was coerced into praying. The appeals court ruled called the ear- lier verdict an effort to stifle constitutionally pro- tected speech. I was priv- ileged to announce, "We’re street legal again!" as our obser- vances commenced. But the real blessings of a National Day of Prayer are not the sort a court can dole out. Take the exercise up the road, in Redding. As we were setting up the prayer tents for the prayer and praise rally in the City Hall Plaza one of the volun- teers – Kent – approached me asking for some help with his tent. He explained that he had sus- tained a shattered right arm in a fall from a roof and four surgeries had not restored either strength or range of motion to the arm; he could not raise it above the horizontal and he could scarcely lift any- thing with it. A group of us prayed and he announced a dramatic improvement. He later made several trips to the healing prayer tent and found a progressive heal- ing underway. By the end of the evening he was praising God from the microphone and lifting his arm over his head. When he came to help break down the Bible Reading Marathon equip- ment the next afternoon he could fully flex his bicep and his arm strength had returned as God continued his heal- ing overnight. Dramatic physical healings are not the only blessings God sends when His people seek Him in public; they are not even the most reveal- ing. During our annual reading of the Bible over the city we simply read aloud – in fifteen minute increments – the entire Bible – round the clock – from start to finish. (It takes about three days.) At least four of our read- ers approached me during the reading to say they had been struggling with personal issues and the very scripture passages they had been (randomly) assigned to read con- tained the very words of hope they most needed to hear. I was reminded of the time in 2007 when we received a call from Jamestown, Virginia, where the four hundredth anniversary of the found- ing of that settlement was being celebrated. The caller said Ezekiel 33 was being read and prayed over the celebration and wondered if we would be willing to interrupt our reading and skip to that chapter to read and pray in solidarity with them. I was reluctant to manipu- late the process, but I walked over to the read- ers’ podium to see where they were and – you guessed it – they were reading Ezekiel 33 because that was where they were at that moment. God is the greatest orchestra conductor of all time and that, as they say, is that! But the great- est blessing of all is the peace that descends like a blanket of grace during the time we read and pray and worship. It occupies a definable radius around the space we occupy in His Name and that radius seems to grow larger with each passing year. The peace is discernible to believers and pre-believ- ers alike; I have had reports from both camps on multiple occasions. That peace is both physical and spiritual, depending on the need of the moment and location. When people we trained set up their own public Bible Reading Marathon in Darien, Connecticut, last year at about this time tornados hit or threatened the six cities that cluster around Darien. The winds simply walked around the city where the Word of God James Wilson GodTalk was being proclaimed and believers and pre- believers approached the leaders to say they knew their city was being spared because the Word was being pro- claimed. When we offered our own Marathon along with the rest of the National Day of Prayer observance that we lead city w ork ers approached us during a series of contentious meet- ings in various meeting rooms of City Hall. They asked that we pray for the peace of God to enter into those meetings. We did and He did. Real- ity is that – one way or another – when we show up in His Name God loves to show off.
