By Alex Pavlovic Bay Area News Group PHOENIX Angel Pagan is fond of the term "happy flight," us- ing it often when the San Fran- cisco Giants win the final game of a road series. No flights this year have been more joyful than Wednesday night's short one to San Diego. On "rookie dress-up day," first-year infielder Matt Duffy hit a two-run, pinch-hit sin- gle in the top of the ninth that gave the Giants a 4-2 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks and got them back within two games of the first-place Dodg- ers, who got blasted 16-2 by the Colorado Rockies at Co- ors Field. To top it off, Pagan, who missed the entire series with a lower back issue, got good news from a doctor's visit. An MRI revealed Pagan is dealing with nothing but inflamma- tion in his lower back, and he's confident he'll be in the lineup Friday night in San Diego. Seems the Te- hama County Shootout is com- ing along at the perfect time, as this week wasn't about loathing over a beating. No, this has been rivalry week and the old say- ing of throw the records out the window aptly applies. One of these teams is about to get a nice positive midseason bump. Adding to the significance is the number 50, as in this is the 50th all-time meeting between the schools. The first meeting came back in 1921, a 6-6 tie. The teams played regularly in the 1920s and 1930s, but the se- ries completely stopped follow- ing the 1952 game. At that point Red Bluff led the series 14-3-1. That included a streak of 10 games where Corn- ing didn't score a point. So the game or lack thereof wasn't really seen as a rivalry. But in 1983 the teams were fi- nally scheduled to meet again. Both teams were also defending section champions and ranked in state polls. The smaller Corning school won 16-8. The teams played again the next year and again Corning won. The following year, Corning won again. As it would turn out the Car- dinals would win every year from 1983-1991. By the time Red Bluff man- aged to beat Corning in 1992, the Tehama County Shootout had finally became a rivalry. Here we are decades later and Red Bluff leads the series 25-23- 1. Corning is 20-11 post-1983. A few years ago I was inter- viewing Corning quarterback Ryan Holland after he won the Shootout. Holland said he had been dreaming of playing in the game since he was a little kid watch- ing it. While older alumni and fans may not have grown up with the Red Bluff-Corning rivalry, there's now an entire generation that views the Shootout as the big game. I asked readers to share their favorite Shootout moment. While I didn't receive a lot, I thought I'd share a couple, the first was emailed in. LEA MINTO'S FAVORITE MOMENT I have been involved in the Shootout for 36 years. My hus- band coached it for 22 years and was inspirational in firing it up at Corning. My favorite Shootout was fall of 2002. On this year Corning played at Red Bluff. For many reasons Corning was the under- dog. One of the reasons was there were only 22 boys who came out for the team and Red Bluff had a lot more. I will never forget the scene as Corning was on the field warm- ing up, all 22 of them spread out. When Red Bluff came out to take the field the first player was on the 50-yard line and the last player had just cleared the locker room door — wow! Red Bluff was big in num- bers and size. I had never seen the Corning boys play so hard as they did that night. They were not going to let down their school, community or their team. When the buzzer went off Corning had won by a touch- down, the only cheering came WEEK 3 PREVIEW Tehama County Shootout reaches 50 The San Francisco 49ers' sur- prise threat in the NFC West, or at least their most immedi- ate, is an Arizona Cardinals team that's overcome adver- sity to sit alone in first place a er the first two weeks.
