Last year — 2013 Red Bluff 21, Corning 14 Christian Shaffer scored the game winning touchdown with 1:05 remaining in the game. It was Red Bluff's first lead of the game and in the end the only one that mattered. Corning led 14-6 at halftime. On Corning's first drive of the game quar- terback Chayce Maday and running backs Chance Nelson and Alex Davila slammed the ball down the Spartans throat. Helped by three Spartan penalties Maday took in the opening score from six yards out and Jayve Uriostegui booted in the extra point. The Spartans countered behind the sharp passing of Greg Dufour, who completed his first six passes of the game, the sixth coming on a 20-yard corner route to Jared Poore for a score. Red Bluff's conversion failed when the Spartans tried some trickery out of a kicking formation. On the first play of the second quarter Davila sped his way past the Spartans defense for a 77-yard touchdown and a 14-6 Corning lead. Red Bluff's defense held from there with a blocked field goal attempt and a stand that began when Corning got the ball at the Spar- tans 15. Shaffer began taking over in the second half. He drove the Spartans down to the Corn- ing 10 where Dufour hooked up with Wyatt Clement to even the score 14-14 after a 2- point conversion. Red Bluff started the game winning drive with 6:02 on the clock. 10 years ago — 2004 Red Bluff 31, Corning 6 Red Bluff won behind a pair of touch- downs from Nick Emigh, who also kicked a field goal. Matt McLeod sealed the game for the Spartans with a 14-yard-run. Jos Valenzueela also scored for the Spar- tans. Darren Nye scored the lone Cardinals touchdown on a 5-yard option play in the second quarter. 25 years ago — 1989 Corning 7, Red Bluff 6 The Cardinals won 7-6 for the second straight year. Red Bluff twice failed to score from within the Corning 5-yard line. The lone Spartan score came on a Luis Hernandez touchdown. Corning scored in the second quarter when David Bettencourt hit Skipper Gleason and Brad Burton nailed the extra point following a fumbled punt on the Spartan 22. The Cards milked the fourth quarter clock. Thursday, September 18, 2014 Page 7 Red Bluff Daily News Shootout games through the years Travis Jensen MOORE EXCAVATING Complete Building Site Preparation!
