Whether they do or not often deter- mines whether the season deemed suc- cessful. The Mercy Warriors will be one of the teams that get better, that's already a given considering how they started their season. Not only did the defending section champions Redding Christian visit Sacred Heart Parish School, but the Warriors weren't the same team as Mercy fans will get to see as the weeks go by. Mercy boasts a roster of 19, but because of a lack of practice time and grades only 10 players suited up for the season opening loss to Redding Christ- ian. That included two freshmen. First-year coach Marvin Benefield said basically Mercy needs to just sur- vive the first few weeks. But he's not conceding the season's ultimate goal, he wants Mercy to host a first-round playoff game. "I want to win. I'm not a poor sport, but I definitely want to win," Benefield said. To earn that home playoff game Mercy will have to finish in first or sec- ond place in the California — South league, improving on last year's fourth place finish and 4-7 record. "They've all been working hard, they're putting in the work," Benefield said. The Warriors plan to run a Power I offense and Benefield said the team will use a quarterback by committee approach with as many a four players taking snaps from center including Koleby Potter and Richie Borges. Benefield, a defensive minded coach, has said he plans to find a way to stop the high scoring offenses that make up 8-man football. William Gentry has stood out during the early part of the season and will pro- vide senior leadership for what is a very young Mercy roster that includes four freshmen and six sophomores. Benefield pointed to one of the fresh- men, Jim Nichols, as a player that has continued to improve from practice to practice. Mercy will need the other 18 players to follow suit, but first they'll just need them to be allowed to suit up.
