That's out of my hands and out of my con- trol, but he's my teammate and I support him to the fullest. I believe the truth will prevail and the truth will come out." McDonald was not avail- able for comment Friday, or during the previous three days of media access to the 49ers locker room. Upon leaving jail Sunday, he told KTVU Ch. 2: "The truth will come out. Every- body knows what kind of person I am. I'm a good- hearted person." Harbaugh said McDon- ald practiced "fine" all week, and that his tardi- ness to practice Wednes- day and Thursday was at- tributed to "dealing with the matter." McDonald's arrest came less than three days af- ter Goodell announced harsher penalties for do- mestic-violence cases, in- cluding a six-game suspen- sion for first-time offend- ers with possibly longer punishment if a pregnant woman was involved. Ac- cording to police-dispatch audio, McDonald's uniden- tified fiancée claimed she is 10 weeks pregnant and that he had hit her and tried pulling her out of his house. Goodell, speaking Wednesday at a youth foot- ball event near Seattle, said the league would "let the process play out, get the facts and make sure you understand the circum- stances. We don't (know the facts) right now." Harbaugh has stated all along two principles are being weighed: his and the 49ers' no-tolerance policy toward domestic vi- olence, and the constitu- tional right to due process. "We've been pretty clear on that," Harbaugh said. "Two principles are woven to- gether here." Hall of Fame safety Ron- nie Lott, on KNBR 680- AM's "Murph and Mac" show, said he would not play McDonald on Sunday. "Everybody has rules. All I can tell you is, next man up," Lott said. "That's what my dad would say. That's kind of a Lott rule. That's not anything toward (Mc- Donald) or toward the situ- ation. It's next man up, and the reason is there's certain things we can't do or put ourselves in certain situa- tions." • Right tackle Anthony Davis (hamstring) will miss the first start of his five-year career, thrusting Jonathan Martin into Sun- day's lineup. Martin, a Stanford prod- uct, hasn't played a mean- ingful game since leaving the Dolphins last October amid teammates' harass- ment. Martin overcame a spring bout with mononu- cleosis and started all four exhibitions in place of Da- vis, who was recovering from April biceps surgery and only practiced two weeks before injuring his hamstring. "I haven't played since October, so I've had to get back to playing at a fast, effective tempo," Martin said. "No question there's definitely a different tempo from the preseason to opening week, so I've got to bring my 'A' game and be ready to compete." In response to his streak ending, Davis wrote on Twitter: "It's a marathon. #DontPanic." • Right guard Alex Boone will play Sunday after just a week of practice follow- ing his offseason-long con- tract holdout. Harbaugh would not state whether Boone would start, just that a roster move would be made Saturday to create room for Boone, who's had a roster exemption. • Wide receiver Michael Crabtree (calf) is listed as questionable. Cornerback Chris Cul- liver (ankle) and tight end Vance McDonald (ham- string) are probable. • Harbaugh would not reveal whether the No. 2 quarterback behind Co- lin Kaepernick is going to be Josh Johnson or Blaine Gabbert, the later of whom sustained a shoulder injury in the Aug. 28 exhibition fi- nale. • Harbaugh said of the team's mindset: "We've had a very good week of practice. Feel like the team is ready to go. Very excited about it and always the case in the opener. We want to play well. We want to improve as a football team, we want to win the game. And it's a great op- portunity to find out where our team is, playing a team like the Dallas Cowboys on the road." • The Cowboys ruled out defensive end Anthony Spencer (knee) and offen- sive tackle Darrion Weems (shoulder). No. 2 wide re- ceiver Terrance Williams (back) is questionable, while quarterback Tony Romo (back) and defensive end George Selvie (shoul- der) are probable. 49ers FROM PAGE 1 draft selection. "I'm excited to watch him play," Allen said. "The kid has come out there and worked hard. He's done a great job in his prepara- tion and I am excited about him watching him go out there and play hard, while watching him to go get ta- cos in the mall. He just has to understand that there are 10 other guys in his side playing their lights out in playing the game." The key to the game may be Tuck, who at first last season looked as if he was slowing down, then he hit his defensive stride by col- lecting 11 sacks, the fourth time in his career he had reached double figures. "I'm excited," Tuck said. "I can understand why they have me here. I can be part of that rebuilding year. "We can do a little some- thing different and enjoy it." Allen hopes that Tuck's leadership that played a big role for the Giants re- appears in the silver and black. "I'm still here," Tuck said. "Some other teams might have thought I was washed up, but the Raid- ers gave me a shot. I un- derstand the business part. I'm doing something differ- ent and I'm enjoying it." • CB Chimdi Chekwa did not participate, so he's listed as out. LB Nick Roach, who suffered a concussion last week, has missed most of the work- outs this week, so Roach is listed as questionable. K Sebastian Janikowski did practice and is probable af- ter nursing a right quad in- jury. QB Matt Schaub has a right elbow contusion and he's probable. DE LaMarr Woodley missed practice and has not practiced all week. • The Raiders plan to go through their walk through session Saturday morning on the field of St. Peter's Prep, New Jersey's top-rated high school foot- ball team. Raiders FROM PAGE 1 Wozniacki walked around the net to check on her. Peng stopped while trail- ing 7-6 (1), 4-3, allowing Denmark's Wozniacki to reach her second Grand Slam final. At a news conference more than four hours later, Peng said she was feeling better. She was not sure whether, in the end, she was the one who said she had to retire or was told to (although tournament di- rector David Brewer said it was Peng's decision). Peng, who is 28, did re- call how she reacted when the doctor suggested it might be a good idea to quit. "I said, 'No, no, no. I don't want to give up. I want to try one more time,"' said Peng, who was playing in her first semifinal in 37 ca- reer major tournaments. "I knew I'm not going to stay maybe too long, but I just want to try, you know. I just wanted to challenge her one more time." Eventually, Peng was taken away in a wheelchair, closing the scary and sur- real scene. "It was really hard to watch," said the 10th- seeded Wozniacki, who lost the 2009 U.S. Open title match. "To see her strug- gling out there — I just wanted to make sure she was OK." In Sunday's final, Woz- niacki will face good pal Serena Williams, who over- whelmed 17th-seeded Ekat- erina Makarova of Russia 6-1, 6-3 to extend her U.S. Open winning streak to 20 matches. If she can make that 21 in a row, the No. 1-ranked Williams will be- come the first woman since Chris Evert in the 1970s to win three consecutive titles at the tournament. "I can say: Yes, she's much better than every- one," Makarova said, when asked to compare Williams to today's other top play- ers. Seeking a sixth U.S. Open championship and 18th major singles title overall, which would tie her with Evert and Mar- tina Navratilova, Williams has won all 12 sets she's played these two weeks. While warming up for her semifinal — in which she won nine straight games and 22 of 24 points in one stretch — Williams saw on TV what was happening to Peng. "I was really, really, re- ally saddened by it. She's such a great person. We train sometimes at the same academy," Williams said. "You never want to see anyone go out like that." Peng, who spoke dur- ing the tournament about nearly being forced to quit tennis after having heart surgery at age 12, began showing signs of distress early in the second set, rubbing her legs between points. When things got re- ally bad, she said, she felt cramping that made it hard to breathe. Players are not allowed to get medical treatment from a trainer or doctor in the middle of a game if all that is wrong is cramping.
