The Tehama County Cattle- women have awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarships to a group of seven accomplished Tehama County students this year. The generosity of the Tehama County community at various TCCW events has made this pos- sible, and the students and the Cattlewomen are all very grateful. This year three scholarships were awarded to college stu- dents majoring in an agricultural field and four scholarships were awarded to students from an ag- ricultural family who are not ag majors. The three ag major scholar- ships went to Emily Andreini, Bai- ley Brownfield and Corey Carpen- ter. The four scholarships to non- ag majors went to Margo Dawley, Wyatt Houghtby, Jessica Macdon- ald and Zak Stroing. Emily Andreini is in her fi- nal year of graduate school at Oklahoma State University in the fall of 2014. She graduated from Red Bluff High school and is the daughter of Norman and Cathy Andreini Emily will com- plete her Masters Degree in An- imal Science, Beef Sustainability in 2015. About a decade ago, the base- ment was a crystal meth labo- ratory, Solyanik said through an interpreter. Now it houses renovated study rooms for the center's "students" searching for freedom from drug and al- cohol addiction. God, Solyanik said on a re- cent Saturday as he celebrated his birthday, has a sense of hu- mor. The center, which is located on a 9 acre property near the Tehama County Public Works office, looks more like a fam- ily home. It's had a recent ad- dition and fresh coats of paint applied. For Solyanik and more than 300 students over the past eight years, the center has been a home away from home. At the moment, Children of the Streets serves the Russian- speaking population in the United States and abroad. Soly- anik, a Russian native himself, said people have sought help in Gerber from such places as New York, North Carolina and Moscow. Solyanik jokes that his neighbors in this small town of about 1,000 souls — even af- ter years of running the orga- nization — could question just what exactly is going on at the property. "The Russian Mafia," he says some may think, because the center can house multiple stu- dents at a given time. "Because they see that we don't work. We only work on our own property. Everything that we do happens on these nine acres." In reality, the Christian cen- ter employs Christian teach- ings, prayer and counseling during a nine-month program. The program's ethos is to shine a light on a new path for its students, and to provide a choice: Live a sober life, or not. Alex, a student five months into the program, said the cen- ter has changed his life. For the past 10 years Alex was a member of a prominent Los Angeles-area street gang, he said. He declined to give his last name, saying he was un- sure of the consequences for doing so. "The last three years I got on drugs, and eventually I got to a point where my friend said I'm not the same person I used to be," Alex said.
