It's a "Where is he now?" version of The Buzz. If you listened to Christian music in the '70s and '80s you are probably familiar with Randy Stonehill. We are going to get an update on what is happening with Stonehill but first, for those who may not be familiar with this legendary artist, let's take a look at where he got his start.. In a recent conversation with Stonehill, I learned how he became one of the pioneers of contemporary Christian music. He began playing and singing the 1960s style rock-n-roll in his early teens. When he was 16 he met a singer named Larry Norman who invited him to come to Los Angeles once he finished high school. Two years later, one week after he graduated, Randy headed to LA with the expectation that his new friend would help him launch his music career. Within moments of arriving, Norman shared with Stonehill the difference God had made in his life and he decided to begin his own relationship with Jesus. Stonehill continued to play the music that was popular at the time but now the lyrics he and Norman wrote were more about God's timeless truth. Stonehill puts it this way, "As we looked around we realized nobody was doing this. It was brand new. And then we watched the Lord just breathe on it and it exploded into this movement that, of course, these days we call contemporary Christian music." When asked about the Christian music of today, Stonehill says, "I think it's at an interesting transitional place. I think a lot of the worship music movement is rich and vital. It's certainly drawing a spiritual line in the sand in a culture that's coming apart. It's interesting to kind of watch what's happening with radio and record companies. I think everyone's still trying to find their feet, like I said, in these changing times. The good news is, though, that with the advent of the Internet, anybody that has a real gift and a real calling can get their voice heard. Back in the day, they (record label executives) were king and that's just how it was. So I like the independence that technology has brought. "So I think, well…when I'm done, when the Lord takes me home, I'll kind of look back and go, 'Look, there's a lot of cool stuff in the new generation that is happening in my wake.'" Stonehill and his wife Leslie now reside in the Columbia, S.C., area. He continues to write and perform to audiences large and small. His motivation has never changed. As he puts it, "If the Lord is breathing on things, you know, that trumps everything." Randy Stonehill Looks Back and Looks Ahead by STEVE TURLEY STEVE TURLEY, Christian 107.3 COMMENTS?
