Contributed by: Violet Kiss We mostly talk about our community service here in Quartzsite, as we should. Today, though, we're talking about our most important inter- national humanitarian project, the worldwide eradication of polio. In 1985, more than 1,000 people (mostly children) PER DAY were crippled or killed by this disease. There were more than 125 coun- tries affected. That year Rotary International began their PolioPlus campaign to im- munize the world's chil- dren. Then in 1988 when the World Health Organiza- tion resolved to eradicate the disease that has crip- pled people for 5,000 years, Rotary jumped in as a major partner. All partners from all Rotarians to UNI- CEF, WHO, the US Center for Dis- ease Control and lately the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation lead all initiatives for a polio-free planet. In January of this year, India has proclaimed being polio-free for 3 years now. This formal declaration extends to all of Southeast Asia (which includes 25% of the world's population) as being polio-free. This is huge since only 5 years ago India represented nearly half of all polio cases worldwide! Rotary's goal is worldwide eradi- cation of polio by 2018. There are only THREE countries left in our entire world with polio activity: Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Reported polio cases have dropped 99% from 350,000 cases per year in 1988 to just 700 cases a year today. We all are on the last steps of eradicating the wild poliovirus. That last 1% is so diffi cult to stop since this disease is in the hardest areas to reach. Governments, politics, wars, make it also hard to work these areas. As Bill Gates has said, "Rotary con- tinues to be the heart and soul of polio eradication, supporting the program directly while also tak- ing on a larger role in encouraging other donors to give more." On that note, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have extended their Rotary Doings Senior Citizens Center updates DID YOU KNOW.....?
