OPINION letters to the editor APPRECIATES NEW STORIES Before we head back to Canada I wanted to let you know how much we have enjoyed "Traveling with Gypsy Jane" in the Desert Mes- senger. Her stories are delightful. We have met Jane on many occasions in Quartzsite; she is a wonderful lady and always so interesting to talk with. We read your newspaper online as often as we can once we get home; it, too, is delightful! Many thanks, and see you in Novem- ber!! Linda and Roy Root, Calgary, Alberta, Canada AA - A NOTE OF THANKS From time to time we write our public media friends to thank them for helping us observe our long-standing tradition of ano- nymity for members of Alcoholics Anonymous. First, let us express our deep gratitude to you. From the begin- ning of A.A. in 1935, its members have recognized that word-of- mouth is not suffi cient by itself to carry the program's message of hope and recovery to the many people still suffering from alco- holism. The public media has been a vital part of this effort, and today we estimate that there are more than 2 million successfully recovering members of Alcohol- ics Anonymous in more than 180 countries. Second, we respectfully request that you continue to cooperate with us in maintaining the anonymity of A.A. members. The principle of anonymity is a basic tenet of our fellowship. Those who are reluctant to seek our help may overcome their fear if they are confi dent that their anonymity will be respected. In addition, and perhaps less understood, our tradition of ano- nymity acts as a restraint on A.A. members, reminding us that we are a program of principles, not per- sonalities, and that no individual A.A. member may presume to act as a spokesman or leader of our fel- lowship. If an A.A member is iden- tifi ed in the media, we ask that you please use fi rst names only (e.g., Bob S. or Alice F.) and that you not use photographs or electronic im- ages in which members' faces may be recognized. Again, we thank you for your continued cooperation. Our fellow- ship does not comment on mat- ters of public controversy, but we are happy to provide information about A.A. to anyone who seeks it. Sincerely, Public Information Committee of Alcoholics Anonymous QUICK SERVICE In February of this year, we left Truth or Consequences, NM in our Smart for two, towing a lug- gage trailer. We called ahead to the Paradise RV Park for a space as we had stayed there previously. Kenda remembered us and stated that they were full but to come and they would get us a spot when one opened up. We arrived mid-February, days before our "home" trailer arrived. We were welcomed like family. Kenda and Bobby offered us the use of their motorhome until our trailer arrived. Faced with sleep- ing more nights in our Smart for two, we gladly accepted. Then the wait began. We moved into our "home trailer" which they moved into a temporary spot. In mid-March, while walking in the desert, I tripped and broke my pelvic bone. Shortly after coming home, the good news came. Our choice of spots had opened. Moving day arrived with me an- chored to the folded down dinette. The movers, Bobby and Dave moved the trailer (and me) into our new space, blocked, leveled and chocked and hooked it up. Here we are now in early April, set up, secure and comfortable. If you want a laid back friendly park in Quartzsite, Come to Para- dise RV Park. Never in my life of wandering have I met a more con- genial "can do" couple of managers. I will close by adding that it still goes on and the outpouring of offers of help and sympathy are beyond description. Needless to say, we have found a home in "Paradise". We all understand it means, "Singing without instrumental music." But that funny word, where did it come from? So I looked it up! Seems it's an Italian word meaning "As in Chapel", so what does that mean? Well the early church never used "instrumental" music because the new statement says "Sing". About 666 A.D. Pope Vitalian is recorded as being the fi rst pope to introduce an organ into the Catholic Church. Thus the word was "born before" 666 A.D. "As in Chapel" without instruments. In regards to instruments in Worship, John Calvin said, "It would be no more suitable than the burning of incense". John Wesley once said, "I have no objection to instruments of music in our wor- ship, provided they are neither seen nor heard." Noel Teague DEADLINE : WED.
