Ted S. Warren — The aSSociaTed PreSS horses stand in the rodeo area of the darrington Fairgrounds in darrington, Wash., on Wednesday. horses displaced by the mudslide that hit the area are being cared for by volunteers at the fairgrounds, who say they also have room for other animals. By Manuel Valdes The Associated Press DARRINGTON, WAsh. » After a rescue worker called her animal clinic saying dogs had been extracted from the destruction left behind by a massive Washington mud - slide, veterinary assistant Cassna Wemple and her col- leagues raced to this small down near the debris field. They found one of the dogs at the f ire station among a f lurry of rescue workers and townspeople. Bonnie, an Australian shep - herd, was wrapped in a com- forter. She was muddy, and had a broken leg in a splint. One of Bonnie's owners had just died in the slide. The other had been pulled out. "She was just very much in shock," Wemple said. In this rural community north of Seattle, Wemple said it's common for residents to have plenty of animals, in - cluding pigs, horses, rab- bits, chickens, dogs and cats. When the deadly slide struck March 22, beloved pets and livestock also perished. The full number of pets and livestock killed may never be known. Authorities also don't have a clear num - ber of how many pets are missing or displaced by the slide, incident spokespeople have said. There are at least 37 horses displaced and at least 10 dogs that were miss - ing, according to different animal services helping the recovery efforts. "To know that their ani - mals are lost and may or may not be found. It's heart break- ing. It's heart breaking for the people and the animals," said Dee Cordell of the Ever- ett Animal Services. Wemple said rescue work- ers could hear horses crying from the debris hours after the slide, but because of the unsafe conditions, rescuers couldn't go in. For those animals that survived, the community and outsiders have rallied in sup - port with donations. Bag af- ter bag of food for dogs, cats and chickens have filled up the rodeo grounds outside Darrington, which is serv - ing as a makeshift shelter. At last count, it totaled nearly 45,000 pounds. On Saturday alone, 27 tons of donated food from Purina arrived. Lilianna Andrews's seven horses are now at the rodeo grounds. Their house wasn't buried in the mud, but the displaced earth formed a dam, backing up the Still - aguamish River into a lake that rose waste-high in the house and as high as 10 feet in the barn. "We got them out be - fore they got any water on them," the 13-year-old said after helping unload hay at the rodeo grounds on Sat - urday. "But they would have drowned. So we just had to evacuate them from the wa- ter, and they've been staying here ever since." The Andrews were in Se- attle when a friend called to check on their whereabouts. When they realized it wasn't just a small mudslide block - ing the road, they hurried home. Their dog, cats and chickens are fine too, An- drews said, although they haven't been able to get in to feed the chickens. Pets also lost and displaced by slide WAshINGTON sTATe By Lisa Baumann The Associated Press DARRINGTON, WAsh. » Crews searching through the muck and devastation wrought by Washington's deadly mud - slide are finding more hu- man remains on the east side of the slide, near the town of Darrington. Steve Harris, a division supervisor for the search effort, said Monday that search teams are learning more about the force of the March 22 slide, and that is helping them better locate victims in a debris field that is 70 feet deep in places. "There's a tremendous amount of force and energy behind this," Harris said of the slide. He didn't provide further details. Harris said search dogs are the primary tool for finding remains in the small, mountainside community about 55 miles northeast of Seattle. He said searchers are finding human remains four to six times per day. The number of confirmed dead was 21, and 30 more remain missing. The death toll is slowly increasing each day, as the medical examiner identifies more fatalities. Searchers have had to contend with treacherous conditions, including house - hold chemicals, septic tanks, gasoline and propane con- tainers. When rescuers and dogs leave the site, they are hosed off by hazardous ma- terials crews. Gov. Jay Inslee on Mon- day asked President Barack Obama for a major disaster declaration in Snohomish County to make programs available to help individuals, households and businesses. NORThWesT More victims found on east side of Washington mudslide The Associated Press PLYMOUTh, WAsh. » A large explosion and fire Mon- day at natural gas process- ing plant near the Washing- ton-Oregon border injured four workers and led to the evacuation of about 200 people from nearby homes as flames and a mushroom- shaped cloud of black smoke reached high into the air. The 8:20 a.m. blast at the Williams Northwest Pipe - line plant in the town of Plymouth, along the Colum- bia River, also punctured a liquefied natural gas stor- age tank. Benton County Sher- iff Steven Keane said some gas leaked from the tank to the ground in a contain- ment area and evaporated into the air, but it was only a small amount. "I think if one of those huge tanks has ex- ploded, it might have been a different story," he said. Of the four workers in- jured, one was treated at the scene and three with burns were taken to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Hermiston, Ore. The three were treated in the emer - gency room for injuries that did not appear to be life- threatening, hospital spokes- man Mark Ettesvold said. Across the Columbia River, the blast shook the home of Cindi Stefani. "It was just a very loud boom," she said. "I looked across the river and saw a giant mushroom cloud and flames at least a couple hun - dred feet high." Animals on neighboring farms were running around, she added. "At that point we were pretty scared. I was think - ing, 'We need to get out of here." Deputies went door to door throughout the town of Plymouth evacuating about 200 residents in a 2-mile ra - dius. Buses were provided for those without cars, and a shelter was set up across the river in Oregon at the Uma - tilla County Fairgrounds. As part of the evacuation, High- way 14 and railroad tracks were shut down. The liquefied natural gas tank has a capacity of 1.2 billion cubic feet, but it was not full, and only a relatively small amount of gas leaked from the rupture and spilled to the ground in a contain - ment area, the sheriff said. exPLOsION 4 hurt, 200 evacuated aer plant fire The herald, SoFia Jaramillo, Pool — The aSSociaTed PreSS an american flag hangs from the only cedar post le standing at the scene of a mudslide monday in oso, Wash. Because if I didn't, I'd experience a burning sensation through my esophagus- like somebody poured hot lead or battery acid down my throat. Add to that those disgusting "mini-throw ups" and I was in "indigestion hell". Doctors put me on all sorts of antacid remedies. But nothing worked. Or if they did, it would only be for a brief period. And then boom! My nightmare would return. Then one day at dinner, a friend of mine said, "Why don't you try an aloe drink?" I said, "Aloe drink? Jeez. That doesn't sound good at all!" The next day he brought me a case of something called AloeCure ® . I was shocked! AloeCure ® tasted pretty good too. It has a pleasant grape flavor that I actually enjoy drinking. I decided to experiment. I stopped taking the PPIs altogether and replaced it with a daily diet of AloeCure ® . Then something remarkable happened - NOTHING! Not even the slightest hint of indigestion. And here's the best part. The next day we had Italian food - my worst enemy. But for the first time in 40 years I didn't need pills or tablets to avoid indigestion. Thank you AloeCure ® ! - Ralph Burns Doctor recommended AloeCure® may be the most important application ever discovered for digestive health!
