Theater firm rejects name of Jesus in Easter ad ALISO VIEJO (AP) — A movie theater ad firm has rejected a Southern California church bid to advertise its Easter service because it uses the name of Jesus. Compass Bible Church pastor Mike Fabarez says he tried to pay for an ad to run at a local movie the- ater for the Aliso Viejo congregation’s annual East- er service at the University of California, Irvine, Bren Center. The ad is aimed at attracting nonbe- lievers to the service. NCM Media Networks, which handles pre-show advertising for many Orange County theaters, gave Fabarez content guidelines, which prohibits nudity, drug use and promotion of religious figures. The Orange County Register says NCM Media released a statement explaining the ad was rejected because Compass Bible Church chose not to revise the ad to meet content guidelines. Celebrating our Christian heritage The federal court ruling in 2010 declaring the National Day of Prayer unconstitutional was a gift to the Body of Christ. The fruit is that record crowds turned out on the day of prayer. The US Constitution recognizes an absolute right to practice our faith – in the public square if we wish – as we see fit, so long as we do not trample on the rights of others to be secure in their persons when we do it. This right is grounded in the Christian Faith, but it is available to members of any faith and of no faith at all. Yet it is a right we can lose if we do not use it. It is exer- cised in many ways we may have taken for granted or forgotten altogeth- er in the cultural wall some have tried to erect between God and that public square. In addition to the annual National Day of Prayer events at Redding’s City Hall, we have organized Culture of Life rallies at the same location. We have been orchestrating the annual reading of the whole Word of God over the city since 2002 – again at City Hall. We partnered with several min- istries to hold a One Nation Under God commemoration of 911 at the county courthouse for several years, to prayer walk city streets and support prayer tents on the streets as well. We always observe protocol – obtaining permits and satisfying legitimate con- cerns that may be raised by officials trying to control traffic, sanitary condi- tions, and noise levels. Since 2004 we have taken a team to the state capitol in Sacramento once a month to pray for the state and its lead- ers. We are given a hearing room by one of several legislators with whom we have built relationship over the years. We spend an afternoon bathing the capitol in prayer, worship, and prophecy whenever the Lord graces us with a word. We bless capitol employ- ees we meet and pray for officials whenever we are given the chance. We have heard many testimonies from staffers and elected offi- cials of what a difference is made by the presence of min- istries of God’s grace inside the building. And, although we believe we pioneered the inside-the-building dimen- sion of this ministry, there are now at least a dozen min- istries from various parts of the state who pray inside and outside on a monthly basis. The land on which the capitol was built was a gift to the state from the Church; God is simply exercising the sover- eignty He never gives up through our presence. The National Day of Prayer comes this year on May 7. The possibilities for observing the day are unlimited. In our city alone we begin the Bible Reading Marathon on the Monday before May 7 at 6 a.m. and read around the clock until Noon on the Thursday when our municipal obser- vance begins. On the eve of the nation- al day we hold a worship and prayer rally at City Hall and invite people to share testimony of what God has done in their lives between the sets of wor- ship music. We have a half dozen prayer tents representing everything from healing ministries to youth to blessing veterans; people can receive prayer in the tents. On Thursday at Noon we have a traditional ceremony in which public officials – on their per- sonal time – pray for the many dimen- sions of our corporate life as a com- munity, state, and nation. Some years James Wilson GodTalk we launch prayer teams to walk and bless designated parts of the city as well. We encourage the whole city to come out to some or all of these events, and we are glad to encourage and support leaders in other cities of the region in whatever activi- ties God and their creative imaginations can vision. What is most important is that we exercise our First Amendment rights in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer – whether on the day or in the season that surrounds it. We come not to protest or to make a point, but to bless God and the commu- nities in which we live. There are actually five rights enumerated in the First Amendment: free speech, assembly, religion, the press, and peti- tion. Each are grounded in the Christ- ian Faith as it unfolded during the first half century of English colonization along the eastern seaboard. It would be a shame indeed if these rights were lost by the very people who are heirs to them as children of the Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ. But, as I said before, it is a use-it-or-lose-it proposi- tion. James Wilson and his wife, Diana, have led PrayNorthState for the past decade. Hear Jim on Radio KBLF, AM 1490, at 8 a.m. on Saturdays. PrayNorthState is an interdenominational ministry of gathering the Body for transformative revival and reconciliation. Contact Jim at 530-941-3470 or at praynorthstate@charter.net Voices of Faith: How should one prepare to die? LIVE IN THE PRESENT Lama Chuck Stanford, Rime Buddhist Center & Monastery, Kansas City, Mo.: From the Buddhist perspec- tive everything in this phenomenal world is impermanent _ nothing lasts. The Buddha said, "What has been gathered will be dispersed, what has been accumulated will be exhausted, what has been built up will collapse, and what is born will one day die." So, one way of preparing for death is by fully appreciating every moment. Our lives consist of moments, much like the frames of a movie film. Each frame or moment of our life is born and then dies and then there is the next moment. Too many of us miss these moments because we are too caught up into thinking about yesterday or about tomorrow. Instead of experiencing the sacredness of the present, many are living in the past or the future. LIVE A GOOD LIFE Pastor Raymond Davis Jr., Greater Corinthian Church of the Christ: If one is truly concerned about dying, and how one should prepare to die, attention should be given to what is written in the Bible. The meaning of a thing is greater than the thing itself. The meaning of dying is greater than dying itself. It is not that we just die; it's what awaits us in the aftermath. The first thing we should do is to live in anticipation."For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself" (Romans 14:7). Secondly, as we live and as we die we do so in accountability. "Every one of us shall give account of himself to God" (Romans 14:12). An Old Testament prophet said to the people of God "prepare to meet your God" (Amos 4:12). The prophets always alluded to future events involving our accountabili- ty to God. The third thing to know in dying — in the aftermath is judgment — "for we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that everyone may receive the things done in his body ... whether it be good or bad" (2nd Cor. 5:10).
