Main St. Suite G Red Bluff • 530-710-5940 Change the equation – STEM in America Math in our country suffers from an image problem. A recent poll showed that more than half of Americans between the ages 18 and 34 admitted that they often say they can’t do math. Nearly a third said they would rather clean the bath- room than solve a math problem. Help is on the way with STEM education — a focus on Science, Technolo- gy, Engineering and Mathematics. The news may be dismal but a focus on STEM makes the outlook promising. America is falling behind almost every developed country in the world. Did you know that the performance in mathematics and science of America’s children lags significantly behind the rest of the world? Did you know that our country employs thousands of immigrants to fill positions related to STEM? Did you know that our nation’s economic competitive- ness is dependent upon a signifi- cant and continual increase of highly trained and capable techni- cal abilities? America needs to move forward immediately on stu- dent performance in critical STEM areas. The promising news is a strong focus on STEM Education is occur- ring in our nation. Grass roots orga- nizations, like Expect More Tehama, are beginning to surface and bring communities together to unite in their support of better preparing our students for career or college by supporting the system in which we strive to educate our chil- dren. At the nation- al level an orga- nization called Change the Equation is bringing busi- ness and educa- tion together to focus specifically on STEM education through great teaching, inspired learners, and a committed nation. Lisa Change the Equation has 110 business part- ners, including Intel, Time Warner Cable, Exxon Mobile, Sally Ride Science, Eastman Kodak and Xerox. They have come togeth- er in support of education as it relates to STEM. These companies know better than anyone that STEM education is essential to the eco- nomic health of America. Experts say that technological innovation accounted for almost half of U.S. economic growth over the past 50 years, and almost all of the 30 fastest-growing occupations in the next decade will require at least some background in STEM. Not only does corporate Ameri- ca needs STEM — we all do because it has a profound and grow- ing impact on our day-to-day lives. STEM helps us make critical deci- sions about our health care, our Sandberg finances and our retirement. It helps us to better understand the compli- cated issues that seem to direct the future of our democracy, and it reveals to us the beauty and power of the world in which we live. I sat in the audience as Linda Rosen, Chief Execu- tive Officer of Change the Equation, shared about her program and I proudly reflected about our own Expect More Tehama and Chief Executive Officers Katie Grissom and Kathy Garcia. I realized that it doesn’t matter if the work is done out of Washington, DC or done right here in Tehama County, it is equally important to the well-being of our nation as it reaches a crossroads in its ability to remain competitive. Your support of the work ahead is equally important. Strive to better understand STEM education and see how you can help. More infor- mation is available at http://www.changetheequation.org/ .
