We're used to this by now--another weekend means more wet weather. The last 8 out of 10 weekends have been soakers, so we're in a pattern. Still no snow, but there are some fast changes showing up, with cold shots of air, then a quick warm up, with moisture thrown in quite often. Try to stay warm and dry in this pattern. Full Upper or Lower Dentures Through A Woman's Eyes By Martha Hynson mhynson1@gmail.com • www.welcomelord.com What Do You Think? Something is the matter with my phone. Don't get me wrong. It does a lot. It's a perfectly good camera, alarm, calendar, and direction finder. I can text, listen to music, go online, and check email, Facebook, and Pinterest, and about a million other things of which I'm not even aware. Unfortunately, when it comes to actually using it as a phone, it has issues. When I talk to people, they tell me they can't understand me, and I don't hear them too well either. So, I suppose the time has come to get a new one. In the meantime, it's made for some rather interesting conversations. Just the other day I heard my daughter say she was going to mentally fast. When I asked her if that was, in fact, what she had said, she assured me she hadn't made any plans for a mental fast, but that it happened frequently without her even trying. I know what she means. I'm pretty sure I've been mentally fasting off and on for years. I just never thought of calling it that. Now that we've coined the term, though, I think it'll come in very handy. Whenever I do something without thinking, I can simply say, "Oh, I'm so sorry! You'll have to excuse me. I'm on a mental fast." Of course, I don't really do anything without thinking. I'm always thinking something. It's just that the wise thoughts I should be thinking are often neglected. It's like some boards my husband salvaged from an abandoned chicken house. He stored them in our barn along with a door he rescued from a shack on his hunting land. There they sat, unused, until last week when a buddy of his came over and transformed them into a tree house. Like that wood, the wisdom God wants to give me often goes unused when, in His hands, it could transform my life. The collection of things my husband brings home is not limited to building materials. A few weeks ago, he brought home a puppy. He may or may not have been mentally fasting when he decided to do that. Nevertheless, she's ours now and we love her, in spite of the fact that her tummy troubles have resulted in my having to collect doggy doo and transport it to the vet for inspection, more than once. After careful analysis, we were told that our pup is a garbage pail. She does not discriminate between food and non-food. She just gobbles up everything she comes across. Mentally, I can be a garbage pail, too. Lately though, some advice shared by friends has been helping me differentiate between what I should and should not be thinking. First, I'm trying to remember the Lord wants me to be broken but not beaten up. Also, instead of allowing my mind to fill with "what ifs" and worries, I'm trying to remember to ponder and pray. Beating ourselves up over our shortcomings and worrying about the future are two things women are usually good at, but that kind of thinking is equivalent to mental junk food. It isn't healthy and can easily take up so much space in our minds that there's no room for the truth of God. This means we're literally starving our minds of wisdom. Thoughts that cause us to feel beaten up are not from God. He simply wants us to let our failures break us to the point of acknowledging our need for a Savior. Once we've accepted His forgiveness, we can live in freedom from that kind of thinking. His sacrifice also frees us from worry. Instead of allowing our minds to be filled with anxiety, we can ponder what Christ has done for us and how much He loves us. If He loves us enough to die for us, surely we can trust Him with our future. I'm thinking of moving into the tree house until our dog gets out of the wild puppy stage. While I'm there I could quietly ponder what He's doing in my life and nourish my mind with scripture. Then, when my dog does something like eat a family heirloom, instead of thinking unwise thoughts, I can remember James 3:7 which assures me that every kind of beast has been tamed by man. Come to think of it, I might even be able to use my phone to help me. Surely there's an app on there that will train a dog.
